Daktronics to Install Largest Single LED Video Display in Mountain West for University of New Mexico Football
Source: Daktronics

BROOKINGS, S.D. – June 13, 2013 – When the University of New Mexico (UNM) football team returns to the gridiron at Branch Field at University Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M., this fall, it will be greeted with the largest single LED video display in the Mountain West. The LED video display will be designed and manufactured by Daktronics (Nasdaq – DAKT) of Brookings, S.D., and installed in August of 2013. The new display will measure 32 feet high by 80 feet wide and feature a 15HD pixel layout.

“This LED display is an important and necessary step in pushing Lobo football and our game-day experience in University Stadium to a new level,” said Paul Krebs, Vice President for Athletics, UNM. “More improvements are on the way as we hope to announce a major upgrade to our in-venue Wi-Fi capability later this summer. We are committed to enhancing the overall fan experience and strongly encourage Lobo fans to purchase season tickets, attend every home game and turn Branch Field into one of the top home-field advantages in the Mountain West.”

The university will use the video display to energize its fans with live video and instant replays. UNM will be able to separate the display into smaller sections to provide up-to-the-minute statistics, scoring information, and other graphics and animations.

The wide angle capability of the display will offer every fan a superb view of all the content shown. It will incorporate excellent image clarity and contrast in the harshest viewing scenarios while also offering multiple levels of protection from the elements.

“The University of New Mexico was looking for a premier LED video display to reward its dedicated fans with an elevated game-day experience, and we worked with its athletic department to fit its needs,” said Brady Jacobsen, Daktronics sales representative. “We’re excited for the upcoming installation and can’t wait to see the display in action this fall.”

Daktronics LED video and messaging display technology offers a long lifetime with minimal maintenance and low power consumption, providing value and excitement for years to come.

About Lobo Football and Branch Field at University Stadium
New Mexico is embarking on its second season under coach Bob Davie. The Lobos’ 4-9 record during his first season gave the program one more win than it had during the three previous seasons combined. UNM ranked fifth in the country in rushing offense in 2012 with an average of 301.3 yards per game, and running back Kasey Carrier set a school single-season record with 1,469 rushing yards.

University Stadium has been home to Lobo Football – of the Mountain West – since 1960 and boasts a capacity of 39,224. For the 2012 season, the field was stripped of natural grass, FieldTurf was installed and the field was officially named Branch Field in honor of Margaret and Turner Branch. Since 2006, the venue has been home to the New Mexico Bowl, a Division I bowl game. The Lobos have played in two of those seven bowl games.

NSPF Announces Two Initiatives to Make Pool Water Safer
Source: National Swimming Pool Foundation

Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, May 28, 2013—Non-profit National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) Board of Directors announced it is funding the third year of a grant supporting the goal of reducing disinfection-by-product (DBP) formation. The $75,000 grant for 2013, awarded to Purdue University for a project that is being directed by Ernest R. Blatchley III, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE includes support from the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council and a leading UV manufacturer, Engineered Treatment Systems LLC. The goal of the research conducted under this grant is to improve understanding of and reduce formation of DBPs, and aligns with the NSPF Board’s mission to help keep pools open by continuing to improve pool safety.

The National Swimming Pool Foundation has placed a high priority on improving pool safety, and increasing the understanding of the health benefits associated with aquatic immersion and exercise. Several high-profile studies have been published suggesting that exposure to chemicals that form in treated pools and spas as a result of the use of disinfectants (e.g., chlorine, bromine, ozone, or UV radiation) – referred to as DBPs – can cause adverse health effects. DBPs are formed when disinfectants react to other chemicals, including those that are included in bodily fluids like urine. The chemistry that leads to DBP formation and decay is quite complex. As a result, research is needed to understand and minimize DBP formation. “It is important that we do the right research to minimize any possible problems associated with DBPs so that people can enjoy the tremendous benefits of swimming, aquatic exercise and immersion,” reinforced Thomas M. Lachocki, Ph.D., with NSPF. “One easy way to reduce DBPs is to reduce urine in pools,” he added.

The National Swimming Pool Foundation wants to make sure the public is well informed about healthy swimming habits. Thus, the non-profit is organizing a 2013 initiative to help make pool water safer and more appealing. A full-day workshop will explore strategies to influence public behavior and reduce urination in swimming pools. The news media can play a key role in helping to change behavior, and are invited to attend and participate in the workshop, which will be led by Edgar Papke following his keynote presentation at the World Aquatic HealthTM Conference on Friday, October 18, 2013 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

One in five Americans admits to peeing in the pool, according to a 2012 survey by the Water Quality and Health Council. Unfortunately, several high-profile Olympians have said it is “OK” to pee in the pool. Nearly 100% of elite competitive swimmers admit to peeing in the pool, according to former U.S. National Team Swimmer, Carly Geehr, in an interview with Quora. “The tragedy and irony is that swimmers and coaches, who are most passionate about growing swimming and aquatics, are contributing to the problem,” stated Dr. Lachocki.

“The October workshop is an opportunity to start a cultural shift. We strongly encourage the community of pool users, coaches and operators to come to the October workshop and work together to improve pool safety,” he added.

“Healthy swimming depends on what we swimmers bring into the pool – and what we keep out of it. We share the water we swim in, and we each need to do our part to keep ourselves, our families, and our friends healthy,” said Michele Hlavsa, chief of Healthy Swimming at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Have you ever walked into an indoor pool area, got a whiff of the strong chemical smell and thought, ‘Wow there’s a lot of chlorine in the pool?’ It’s not actually the chlorine. It’s the di-and tri-chloramines, or what you get when chlorine combines with what comes out of (e.g. pee) or washes off of (e.g., sweat and personal care products) swimmers’ bodies. Di-and tri- chloramines are different from the mono-chloramine, which is sometimes used to treat our drinking water. They irritate the eyes and respiratory track and can even aggravate asthma,” she explained.

Urine in pools interferes with the chemistry and reduces the efficacy, thus compromising the safety and health of bathers. “Peeing in the pool is a big deal; the addition of urine to the chemically-treated water causes chemicals to form and helps unhealthy germs to survive,” said Dr. Lachocki. Ms. Hlavsa agreed, saying “Mixing chlorine and urine not only creates di- and tri-chloramines – it also uses up the chlorine in the pool which would otherwise kill germs.” “On top of that, it’s not just about protecting those in the water,” summarized Lachocki. “Lifeguards, coaches, parents and swimmers on deck are breathing in the air that has DBPs formed from urine and disinfectants - especially at indoor pool environments. Is it really too much to ask that swimmers take two minutes to use the rest room?”

About NSPF
The National Swimming Pool Foundation® is a non-profit organization established in 1965, dedicated to improving public health worldwide and is the leading educator of aquatic facility operators and pool and spa professionals, and the chief philanthropic research sponsor in the aquatics field. The foundation has donated over $4 million since 2003 to fund grants to prevent illness, injury, and drowning, and to demonstrate the health benefits of aquatic activity. In 2012, the Foundation launched the Step Into Swim Campaign, a 10-year initiative to create 1 million more swimmers. Teaching people to swim is an investment in the next generation. The campaign raises funds that are directly given to leading learn-to-swim organizations. Visit www.nspf.org and www.StepIntoSwim.org to learn more and to donate.

Source: Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.

May 21, 2013 : PASADENA, CALIF. – Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC) announced today that, together with Texas Medical Center’s National Center for Human Performance (TNCHP), it is participating in a research study designed to evaluate and enhance safety factors affecting youth athletes.

The Jacobs-sponsored study was conducted through a Jacobs Space Act Agreement with the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC), and involved the evaluation of various means for reducing the momentum transferred by a soccer ball to the head of a youth soccer player. Students from Rice University and The Kinkaid School (both located in Houston, Texas) were involved in the study as part of a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) internship program.

Jacobs personnel worked with TNCHP to set up experiments in the NASA JSC Vibration & Acoustic Test Facility; operating the test facility equipment and helping the students acquire the necessary data.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Terry Hagen said, “We are very pleased to sponsor The National Center for Human Performance and to be instrumental in these studies focusing on youth sports safety. Jacobs is committed to providing STEM educational opportunities and to investing in activities and education programs that interest students in the possibilities of future careers in our industry.”

“Athletics provide opportunities for young people to prepare for real life by learning to deal with adversity, work with others toward a common goal, overcome obstacles, fail, be defeated, and to win,” said Texas Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer Robert C. Robbins, M.D. “That being said, at least one in 15 of all youth sports participants goes to the emergency room each year for a sports injury. I believe this research is critical in finding answers and solutions for injury prevention.”

TNCHP’s mission is to maintain and enhance human performance in the arts, sports, space exploration, the military, and the general public, through appropriate applications of research and education in medicine and related sciences.

Jacobs provides engineering, scientific, and technical services to the Engineering and Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Directorates at NASA JSC.

Good Sports Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary with Major Milestone
Source: Good Sports

Quincy, MA, May 22, 2013 – In the past decade, more than 500,000 kids have hit the country’s fields and courts with donated uniforms, shoes, balls and other equipment, thanks to Good Sports, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit dedicated to partnering with manufacturers to provide youth with sporting goods. Now, the organization is celebrating the donation of $8.8 million in sports and fitness equipment over 10 years, as well as more than a half-million kids outfitted for physical activity.

An inaugural donation of 500 basketballs from Spalding, donated to local Boston-area sports organizations, kicked the program off in 2003. Since then, Good Sports has expanded from Massachusetts to 41 states across the country, serving youth in 22 diverse sports – from volleyball to boating, soccer to gymnastics. To date, the nonprofit has helped more than 1,000 youth sports teams, leagues and clubs, channeling donated sports equipment from top-of-the-line manufacturers to organizations in need. As a result, 69 percent of recipient organizations reported serving more youth, while 68 percent dropped participation costs for families; 64 percent started new athletic programs.

Melissa Harper and Christy Keswick, the organization’s executive duo and members of the founding team behind Good Sports, believe all kids deserve the chance to play, and receive the vast health and social benefits of regular activity, regardless of where they live and family income. Looking ahead, Harper and Keswick hope to build on the nonprofit’s impressive first decade of growth, as they believe at least five million more kids need help getting on the field.

“Physical activity is critical for child development, not only physically but academically and emotionally,” Good Sports CEO Melissa Harper said. “Kids from advantaged backgrounds should not be the only ones to benefit from sports and fitness.  All kids should have the opportunity to play, and we are committed to making that a reality.”

Good Sports’ success stems from its mutually-beneficial partnership model, which since inception has included 114 relationships with sporting goods manufacturers and corporations. Partners benefit from channeling donation requests through Good Sports, generating a strong return on investment, in addition to the positive marketing and public relations benefits. Equipment partners, like New Balance, Easton-Bell Sports, Reebok and Wilson, further benefit through significant operational efficiencies gained through a donation partnership with the organization, as it allows them to easily shed surplus products.

Good Sports also collaborates with numerous corporate partners, including several Fortune 500 companies. Professional athletes and teams also partner to deliver donations and serve as role models; pro partners include Will Middlebrooks of the Boston Red Sox, Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots, Carl Landry of the Golden State Warriors and Corey Wooten of the Chicago Bears, as well as pro sports teams, including the Boston Celtics, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia Eagles.

Good Sports’ model works because all parties recognize the pressing need to support American sports and fitness programs. Children benefit from constructive outlets and physical activity, and today’s kids are in dire need of healthy opportunities. One in three American children are overweight or obese, a number that has more than tripled since 1980, even as fitness and athletic opportunities decline, particularly in urban areas. The 2008 U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends at least one hour of daily activity for youth, but research shows only 42 percent of children between 6 and 11, and only 8 percent of teens, accomplish this. In fact, more than 50 percent of kids stop playing sports by 12 years old. Good Sports serves youth up to 18 years old in diverse communities – from 16,000 kids at a popular Boston community center to small teams in Iowa farmland – in a cohesive, passionate effort to counteract these negative and unhealthy trends.

About Good Sports

Good Sports helps lay the foundation for healthy, active lifestyles by providing athletic equipment, footwear and apparel to disadvantaged young people nationwide. By partnering with sporting goods manufacturers, Good Sports gets crucial equipment to kids who need it most, getting them in the game. Since 2003, Good Sports has provided more than $8 million worth of equipment to 1,000 youth programs, impacting more than 500,000 kids.

STMA Announces Sponsorship Support for First Ever U.S. National Arboretum Peer-Reviewed Exhibit
Source: Sports Turf Managers Association

LAWRENCE, Kan. (May 17, 2013) – The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) today announced its sponsorship and planning support of the United States National Arboretum’s (USNA) “Grass Roots” Initiative, the first peer-reviewed exhibit of its kind hosted by the governmental research center.  The exhibit will feature an educational section entitled “Game Winning Grass” that will examine turf in sports fields and its importance to athletes and athletic performance, among other related topics.

The exhibit will be peer-reviewed by Division C-5 (Turfgrass Science) of the Crop Science Society of America and is expected to run four years on USNA grounds with construction anticipated to begin Fall 2013.  Efforts will encompass a variety of informational outreach programs to eventually include “…an onsite exhibit, symposia, workshops, and demonstrations, all aimed at expanding knowledge at a range of levels – from school children to policymakers – about the importance of turf and turf research on the landscape and the environment”, according to material provided by USNA Director Colien Hefferan.

“STMA’s participation in the Grass Roots Initiative is especially important, as it will take a science-based approach to grass research in general and, specifically, its examination of the turfgrass industry,” said STMA President Michael Goatley, Jr., Ph.D. “Our hope is that this informational exhibit will demonstrate to a wider audience – who perhaps might not be as familiar with our industry – all the benefits of turfgrass, including carbon sequestration and soil stabilization.”

Sports fields and lawn games will be one of 14 topics featured at the exhibit, which will feature three main focal points related to lawns and field grass – people, plants, and environment – and will include information on lawn care equipment, rain gardens, fertilizer, green roofs, danthonia, agricultural grasses, golf, grass structure, and cool-season/warm-season grasses, among others.

Fundraising efforts are currently underway to meet the USNA’s $400,000 goal. Those interested in donating to the turfgrass exhibit - both individuals and companies alike, of all sizes – are encouraged to contact U.S. National Arboretum Director Dr. Colien Hefferan directly at Colien.Hefferan@ars.usda.gov or 202-245-4539.

The U.S. National Arboretum, according to department materials, “…encompasses more than 440 acres of land in northeast Washington and also has worksites in Beltsville, Md., and McMinnville, Tenn., and is one of the world's premier woody plant research facilities and public gardens. The arboretum was established by Congress in 1927 to serve the public need for scientific research, education and gardens that conserve and showcase plants that enhance the environment. More than 475,000 people each year visit the arboretum's plant collections and participate in events and education programs.”

Sporturf Expands into the Midwestern U.S.
Source: Sporturf

Dalton, Ga. (May 21, 2013) – Sporturf, an international manufacturer and builder of synthetic turf fields, has significantly expanded its presence in the Midwest with the opening of the company’s third regional field office in Kansas City, Missouri.  Sporturf Midwest is under the leadership of President Craig Shonk, and will focus on Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.

“This strategic move opens up a market that Sporturf has not really been in before,” noted Shonk. “Bringing an ISO manufacturer and a Midwest-based ASBA certified field builder together gives clients the best of both worlds.”

Sporturf Midwest recently completed their first, full-size turf install in Nebraska with the practice field at Millard North High School in Omaha, the largest high school in the state. Millard North benefitted in many ways from the new field, including having access to the most current fiber technology. Their team, the Mustangs, will play soccer and football games on Powerhouse 3C featuring a custom blend of monofilament and tape fibers that are the wave of the future.

Peru State’s historic Oak Bowl is the next project to take advantage of Sporturf’s local “grassroots” plan of allowing direct access with their synthetic turf manufacturer. “Building long lasting relationships gives everyone involved unprecedented peace of mind,” added Darby McCamy, Sporturf Fields Vice President. “We have bridged the gap between owner and manufacturer with our local team of certified field builders, who focus on the design-build process more than the next sale.”

The Sporturf main office and mill is located in Dalton, Georgia, and San Diego-based Sporturf International started in 2003.  In addition, Sporturf International serves some of the most prominent sports facilities in South America and the Caribbean, such as the Haiti FIFA National Stadium and Eddy Coello Stadium in Ecuador.

About Sporturf
Headquartered in Dalton, Georgia, Sporturf supplies large and small customers alike with the widest variety of turf in the world. The company is a division of Controlled Products, one of the leading manufacturers of synthetic turf worldwide. Keep Youth Sports Safety Top of Mind: Guidelines from NATA
Source: National Athletic Trainers' Association

DALLAS, May 15, 2013 – With the spring sports season well under way and summer preseason practices and youth league games around the corner, young athletes are already enjoying warm weather activities and competition. “Every team and athlete should have sports safety as a top priority,” says Larry Cooper, chair of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Secondary School Committee and head athletic trainer at Penn Trafford (Pa.) High School. “It’s vital for coaches, athletic trainers, parents and the athletes themselves to maintain good communication and follow guidelines to ensure all participants are fit for play.”

NATA hosted the 4th Youth Sports Safety Summit earlier this year with the support of the Youth Sports Safety Alliance, now composed of 109 organizations committed to keeping athletes safe, and launched the first-ever National Action Plan for Sports Safety and Student Athlete Bill of Rights (www.youthsportssafetyalliance.org). “Each athlete is entitled to appropriate care, prevention and treatment of injuries should they occur,” says Cooper.

NATA offers several sports safety tips to keep athletes in the game:

1.       Make sure the athlete is physically and mentally in the game: Parents, with assistance from coaches, should determine whether their children are physically and psychologically conditioned for the sport/activity level they’re playing. Do not push children into something they do not want to do. Additionally, if an athlete has been injured and is returning to sport, it’s critical for him or her to have the right mind set and confidence to return to play and avoid repeat injury.

2.       Get a pre-participation exam: All athletes should have a pre-participation exam to determine their readiness to play and uncover any condition that may limit participation.

3.       Follow a team approach to care: In the case of injury, find out who will provide care and ask to review their credentials. Many schools and sports teams rely on athletic trainers or parents with medical and first aid training and certification to keep kids safe. Yet less than half of high schools have access to athletic trainers.

4.       Beat the heat: Acclimatize athletes to warm weather activities over a 14-day period. The goal is to increase exercise heat tolerance and enhance the ability to exercise safely and effectively in warm and hot conditions. Should heat illness occur, cool first and transport second: immediate cold water immersion is critical to reducing the athlete’s temperature rapidly. Determine core body temperature to best assess the athlete’s condition.

5.       Use your head: Athletes should be encouraged to speak up if they are suffering any related symptoms (dizziness, loss of memory, fatigue). Concussions must be carefully managed using follow up assessments of symptoms, neurocognitive function and balance, prior to initiating a gradual return to play. Should a more serious brain injury occur, the medical staff should be prepared to transport the athlete to a facility, while ensuring adequate ventilation and elevating the head to decrease intracranial pressure.

6.       Maintain Heart health: Recognition is vital to treatment: sudden cardiac arrest should be suspected in any athlete who has collapsed and is unresponsive. Public access to early defibrillation is essential: a goal of less than 3-5 minutes from the time of collapse to delivery of the first shock from an automated external defibrillator (AED) is strongly recommended. Most schools now have AEDS. Ensure that the medical expert and other personnel know where they are located, how to use them and that they are placed on sidelines during competitions and games.

7.       Share an athlete’s medical history:
Parents should complete an emergency medical authorization form, providing parent contact information and permission for emergency medical care for the student athlete. Check with your school/league to obtain the form.

8.       Ensure equipment is in working order:
Make sure all equipment ranging from field goals, basketball flooring, gymnastics apparatus and field turf are in safe and working order. This also includes emergency medical equipment such as spine boards, splint devices, AEDs (which should be checked once per month; batteries and pads need consistent monitoring and replacing). All it takes is a slip on a wet surface or twist of an ankle on an ungroomed field to lead to lower extremity injuries, among others.

9.       Ascertain coaches’ qualifications:
A background check should always be performed on coaches and volunteers:

-       Coaches should have background and knowledge in the sport they are coaching. They should be credentialed if that is a requirement in the state, conference or league.

-       Coaches should have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED and first aid training.

-       Coaches should strictly enforce the sports rules and have a plan for dealing with emergencies.
-       Ensure appropriate credentials for coaching from the respective sport governing body.
-       Coaches can also take an online course by visiting: http://www.nata.org/Sports-safety-for-youth-coaches-course

10.   Check that locker rooms, gyms and shower surfaces are clean: With the advent of MRSA and related bacterial, viral and fungal skin infections reported in recent years, it is critical to keep these surfaces routinely cleaned and checked for germs. Athletes must be discouraged from sharing towels, athletic gear, water bottles, disposable razors and hair clippers. All clothing and equipment, including bags, should be laundered and/or disinfected on a daily basis.

11.  Be smart about sickle cell trait: All newborns are tested at birth for this particular inherited condition and those results should be shared during a pre-participation exam. Red blood cells can sickle during intense exertion, blocking blood vessels and posing a grave risk for athletes with the sickle cell trait. Screening and simple precautions may prevent deaths and help the athlete with sickle cell trait thrive in his or her chosen sport. Know the signs and symptoms (fatigue or shortness of breath) to differentiate this condition from other causes of collapse.

12.  Ensure an emergency action plan is in place:
Every team should have a written emergency action plan, reviewed by the athletic trainer or local Emergency Medical Service. Individual assignments and emergency equipment and supplies need to be included in the emergency action plan. If an athletic trainer is not employed by the school or sport league, qualified individuals need to be present to render care. Knowing that a school has prepared for emergency will give parents peace of mind.

13.   Adopt a “Time Out” system: Each health care team should take a “Time Out” before athletic events to ensure emergency action plans are reviewed and in place. Determine the role of each person; communication coordination; presence of ambulance; designated hospital; test of all emergency equipment; issues that could impact the plan such as weather or other considerations.

14.   Build in recovery time: Allow time for the body to rest and rejuvenate in between practices, games and even seasons. “Recovery time is essential,” says Cooper. “Without rest and a change of motion and activity, we put young athletes at risk of repetitive or chronic injury.”

15.   Breathe easier:
Athletes with asthma should be properly educated about their condition, appropriate medications, use of inhaler equipment and how to recognize “good or bad” breathing days to prevent exacerbations. A warm up protocol may decrease the risk of asthma or reliance on medications.

16.   Stay smart about steroids: Use of anabolic-androgenic steroids can lead to a host of negative effects on the health and well-being of athletes and non-athletes alike. Be aware of signs and symptoms of misuse including: rapid body mass or increase in performance; extreme muscular growth; abnormal or excessive acne, unexplained hypertension, moodiness, aggression, depression or obsession with exercise and diet. Report this immediately to the athletic trainer or other school medical professionals.

“It’s critical that all members of a school’s athletic health care team, parents, teachers and others involved in the care of the athlete have ongoing communication to ensure a safe sports setting,” says Cooper. “With those protocols in place, athletes can enjoy the great spirit, competition, and accomplishment that come from safe and fair play.”

“And, if your school is following the right protocols, enter it in the NATA Safe School award program that recognizes schools implementing appropriate steps to keep athletes safe. It is a win-win for students, the athletic health care team and school at large.”

Paul Byrne Announces Retirement as Precor President; Rob Barker Named as Successor
Source: Precor

Woodinville, WA – May 13, 2013 – President Paul Byrne announced today that after 28 years with Precor, including 13 as President, he will begin his retirement on September 1.  Precor Vice President – EMEA & APAC, Rob Barker, will assume the presidency in the culmination of a long-developing succession plan.

When announcing his retirement Byrne shared:

“Over the past 35 years, I have been fortunate to have been part of an industry that has contributed to the well being of so many people, and to have spent 28 of those years at Precor has been beyond fortunate.  It has been an immeasurable gift.  I will retire with great pride in what we have accomplished and with eager anticipation of what lies ahead.”

Byrne, one of the most recognized and respected executives in the fitness industry, began his career as the co-founder of Concept 90, a chain of stores that helped introduce the concept of specialty fitness retail in the United States.  In 1985, Precor founder David Smith invited Byrne to join the then fledgling company as Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  In 2000, Byrne took the helm as president.  Over the course of 28 years Byrne has been a consistent visionary, guiding the transformation of Precor, the fitness industry and the way millions of people exercise.  Under his leadership, Precor:

·      Grew from a $20 million manufacturer of home rowing machines in the United States to a $350 million supplier of home and commercial fitness experiences globally
·      Developed a corporate culture admired for openness and loyalty which is regularly recognized in media surveys of “Best Places to Work”
·      Introduced the Elliptical Fitness Cross-Trainer (EFX®) , establishing what is now the second largest category of cardio equipment found in homes and gyms
·      Introduced the Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT®), the most personalized piece of cardio training equipment available
·      Established the standard in the newly developing category of networked fitness with Preva®, which now operates in more than 1,000 commercial installations across 37 countries

Upon Byrne’s recommendation, Rob Barker was unanimously approved as the new President by the Amer Sports Board of Directors and Heikki Takala, President & CEO of Amer Sports.  The promotion of Barker continues the legacy of internal leadership development at Precor.  The expectation of a smooth transition and continued success of Precor was emphasized by Byrne:

“Rob has been part of the Precor family since 1995, and I consider him a great colleague and a great friend.  He has done an extraordinary job leading our international business and helping to shape our overall strategy as part of the global senior management team. I am confident in the future of the Precor business and the Precor culture with Rob as our new President.”

Barker joined Precor in 1995 as the U.K. Sales and Marketing Manager and has developed his experience through several positions.  For the last five years Barker served as Vice President – EMEA & APAC and as a member of the global Precor senior management team where he has helped shape the company’s growth strategy.  During his five year tenure at the helm of EMEA & APAC, the Precor business has grown dramatically.  From 2008 through 2012, sales increased 133 percent and now represent 45 percent of all Precor revenue.  Barker will begin his transition now, enjoying several months of overlap with Byrne.  He and his family will relocate to the United States this summer.  In response to the announcement Barker remarked:

“I am honoured and excited to be asked by Paul Byrne and Heikki Takala to become the Precor President upon Paul’s retirement.  I congratulate Paul on his strong career and admire his extraordinary efforts in shaping Precor into the world-leading company that it is today. It has been my good fortune to work closely with Paul for many years and to see first-hand how Precor has, under his stewardship, innovated entirely new categories of fitness equipment and services like the EFX, AMT and Preva. It will be a pleasure to work with our employees worldwide to continue the Precor legacy of innovation.”

Precor operates as the fitness segment of Amer Sports, where the traditional Precor expertise in exercise is complemented by the other brands’ deep understanding of sports and advanced sports equipment.  Heikki Takala, President and CEO of Amer Sports, added:

“I would like to thank Paul for his great contribution to the company as President of Precor.  Paul leaves a huge legacy, with very strong business momentum coupled with a tremendous strategic business transformation from ‘traditional’ fitness company into a ‘networked’ business behind the successful introduction of Preva.  As to Rob Barker’s appointment, I’m really glad that we have been able to internally grow a professional like Rob to assume Paul’s role. Rob’s many years of experience with Precor has given him the skills to succeed in the new position.”

“By partnering with Spalding, we are ensuring our member colleges and their student-athletes are playing with the best on-field equipment and reinforcing our goal of promoting two-year college athletics on a national level,” said Mary Ellen Leicht, Executive Director of the NJCAA. “With nearly 60,000 student-athletes competing in the NJCAA, this partnership is a great step forward for our membership.”

The NJCAA is one of the largest intercollegiate sports organizations in the United States, second only to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The equipment provided by Spalding is manufactured with premium leather or composite materials developed for improved on-field performance in each sport. The TF-SB1 football, for example, is constructed of exclusive Horween “S” tack leather for improved grip and “spiral balance” technology for increased passing accuracy.

“This partnership allows us to provide the NJCAA’s talented student-athletes with the best equipment possible, while strengthening our presence in collegiate athletics,” said Paul Sullivan, Senior Vice President for Spalding.

Under the terms of the agreement, Spalding and Dudley will be the “Official Ball” of NJCAA baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, football and softball until June 2018. In a unique aspect of the agreement, member institutions will be able to order equipment directly on the NJCAA website while continuing to maintain their business relationship with their local team dealers.
