Fitness App Disables Screens, Motivates Physical Play

A new app and fitness band by PlayGoal monitors physical activity and manages electronic devices, with the goal of giving parents more control over their children’s fitness.

The new PlayGoal fitness band is operated using a touchscreen and pairs with the company’s Android app, making it possible to lock access to devices until a predetermined fitness goal is met.

SportTechie explains that certain fitness goals can be set to allow limited amounts of screen time, after which devices will automatically relock until the next goal is reached.

According to PlayGoal founder Brittany Oler, the app and band combination combats the risk of children developing a sedentary lifestyle at a young age by motivating physical play.

“It helps create a system whereby you, the parent, no longer have to play the bad cop and your child feels he or she is in control. We are really excited about the launch and believe this will be one of the most innovative technologies of 2017,” says Oler.

The fitness band and app are available to consumers via Kickstarter with a $30 pledge.
