The Valley Park wave pool liner project is costing more than Putnam County officials initially expected.

County commissioners signed a change order Thursday for more than $47,000 for additional concrete decking work and new steps that makes the pool compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Putnam County Parks and Recreation Director Jarod Dean said the changes were necessary.

"Our main goal is to ensure public safety, Dean said.

The new steps are shorter, making it easier for people to enter and exit the pool. Dean said the new decking will remove trip hazards and cracks that were in the old deck.

The pool is scheduled to open during the Memorial Day weekend. Dean said the construction plans are still on track. The pool was closed last year after delays in repairs.

Dean said the pool will have food trucks, new concessions and cabana and umbrella rentals this summer. Plans for new activities at the pool are also underway.

Construction is also expected to begin at Valley Park in less than two weeks.

The first phase of the project includes updating several recreational areas; converting the baseball, softball and soccer fields from grass to turf surfaces and repurposing them to regulation sizes for tournament play; and constructing a new playground.

The first phase of the project will cost almost $4.5 million.

Dean said in order to keep people safe and prevent damage to construction equipment, they will close the park's gates at night. He encourages people who are in the parks at night carry a flashlight and wear reflective clothing in order to stay safe. Valley Park has limited lighting at night.

"I'd encourage people to be patient because they won't have the same kind of access, Dean said.

Dean said the finished product will be worth the wait. The county believes the park will encourage tourism and will bring visitors to the county for sporting tournaments.

"It's something Putnam County is going to be so proud to have ownership of, Dean said.

Dean said without the Putnam County Commissioners and the county administration, including County Manager Brian Donat and Assistant County Manager Jeremy Young, the project would not be possible. He said although the project is still in its beginning stages, the county has already collaborated and planned for whatever comes next.

"Putnam County can be a focal point of the state for other counties to model themselves after, Dean said. "We all share the same vision.
