In recreation centers, roll-up doors made of metal are typically used to allow for easy transport of equipment between indoor and outdoor activity spaces, or to close off storage areas or point-of-sale operations.

But roll-up doors of the type specified for the natatorium at the AUM (Auburn University at Montgomery) Wellness Center serve a more healthful purpose — helping to keep the interior environment fresh. Three 10-by-10-foot operable panels provide up to 300 square feet of open air whenever the time seems right. Says James Braam, a director of Kansas City, Mo.-based design firm HOK's Sports + Recreation + Entertainment practice, "You can have the best mechanical system in the world, but you're still always fighting chloramines close to the pool deck."
