Space Saver
Featuring input from recreation administrators at almost 200 U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities, Space Planning Guidelines for Campus Recreational Sport Facilities ($24, Human Kinetics, paperback) includes detailed recommendations for space-per-student facility planning. Cross-referenced by facility type and enrollment, the guidelines are presented in an easy-to-understand chart format and cover fitness facilities, climbing and outdoor adventure facilities, aquatic facilities, outdoor sports facilities and entire indoor facilities (including locker rooms). This information is complemented by black-and-white photos, extensive appendices and a companion web site that provides links to facility specifications, numerous sports' national governing bodies and additional photographs.

Athletes in Business
The business magazine Portfolio recently launched "Back to Back," an online video series featuring professional advice from famous athletes who successfully made the transition from playing sports to running a business. The series debuted with skateboarder-turned-entrepreneur Tony Hawk, who in a series of one-on-one interviews explains the importance of authenticity in marketing and how to recognize and acknowledge failure. Other multiple two- and three-minute segments feature speedskater Eric Heiden, football player Jerry Rice, figure skater Peggy Fleming and gymnast Cathy Rigby discussing changing careers, learning new skills, leveraging celebrity and discovering unexpected parallels between life on the field and in the office. Expertly filmed and easily organized, these videos reveal people who may actually be more similar to the rest of us than we think.
