Arena Renovation Dresses Up Restrooms
Exhibit A in how to dress up the back end of a concrete-block seating bowl, the renovation of Vancouver's BC Place included the insertion of colorful entrance sleeves within each vomitory made from solid-core plastic laminate, painted aluminum and vinyl base, and featuring recessed light fixtures. Stantec (of Vancouver, B.C.) jazzed up co-located restrooms even more, by extending the concourse's updated color scheme to the tiled-wall entries and scouring the globe for the various symbols that denote male and female restrooms. Twelve-inch-tall abstractions of the pictogram persons were set on rear walls, while large graphics of the standard ADA-guideline restroom pictograms were scaled to the size of an actual person for dramatic effect. The full-sized pictograms were water-jet cut into the background tile in an offsite warehouse, then dismantled and reassembled on site.
