Amid outcry from residents, the city council in Edmonds, Wash., voted to temporarily ban the installation of crumb-rubber synthetic turf fields.

Crumb-rubber is a popular material for synthetic turf, and is made from recycled tires.

According to the Seattle Times, after plans were announced for a new field installation project, the debate over turf began. Crumb-rubber infill was used, despite residents concerns.

Parents and neighbors protested, and after hearing months of testimony from community members who fear that crumb-rubber infill might be hazardous and harmful, the council unanimously passed an ordinance banning the material for the next 18 months.

The ban will provide time for new research on the negative impacts on the crumb-rubber material.

City Councilman Mike Nelson said that the council hopes to have adequate information to determine whether a permanent or extended ban is necessary by the time the 18-month ban expires.
