Penn State Pushes for Liquor License

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour has reportedly asked the Board of Trustees to approve increased alcohol sales at on-campus athletic venues.

According to WJAC, alcohol sales at student events aren’t being discussed. Other schools, including West Virginia and Ohio State, have lifted bans on alcohol sales at sporting events in recent years, citing financial reasons.

Administrators within the athletic department say they aren’t looking to sell alcohol widely during events like PSU football games, but would be interested in exploring alcohol sales in private areas or suites.

In addition to expanded sales in those areas, a liquor license might allow for wider sales at non-school sponsored events.

According to WJAC, one such event would be an outdoor NHL hockey game. Organizers are planning a game at Beaver Stadium that would make a likely candidate for liquor sales.

Barbour said that expanded alcohol sales could help Penn State facilities attract more events.
