Wilson Out at Indiana After Player Mistreatment Claims

Athletic director Fred Glass of Indiana University announced in a press conference Thursday that six-year Hoosiers head coach Kevin Wilson has resigned.

An unnamed source told SB Nation that the basis of Wilson’s resignation was repeated objections on the part of team administration over Wilson’s treatment of the players, while other implications have been made that it specifically stems from Wilson’s philosophies regarding injured players.

Former Indiana quarterback Zander Diamont, who announced last week that he will be leaving the game due to head injury concerns, was surprised Wilson’s resignation. “I have no knowledge of my announcement last week having anything to do with Coach Wilson’s being fired. I certainly hope that’s not the case,” he tweeted on Thursday.

Wilson’s resignation is a surprise for many, seeing as he signed a $15.3 million contract extension with Indiana in the winter of last year. Indiana will compensate Wilson $542,000 in base salary.

At Thursday’s press conference, Glass assured reporters that there were no NCAA compliance issues behind Wilson’s resignation. “There’s no smoking gun or single precipitating event that led to where we are today. I think it’s really a realization by myself and Kevin that we’re not on the same page about what I view as key ways to how the program needs to be led,” he said.

Glass expressed his desire to move forward as a team and an institution and said he feels Wilson’s resignation is an accomplishment in that regard, adding, "I appreciate Coach Wilson's many positive contributions to our football program. This has nothing to do with the performance of the football team, which I view as quite positive and very much heading in the right direction.”

Defensive coordinator Tom Allen will take over for Wilson as head coach.
