Coach Comes Out, Gets Ousted
The story of Lisa Howe, Belmont University's women's soccer coach who resigned last week after she told school officials that she and her same-sex partner were expecting a child, has become one of conflicting accounts.

Belmont administrators claim Howe — in her sixth year at the university, which she led to its first NCAA soccer tournament in 2008 — resigned on her own, without offering further explanation. But, according to The Tennessean, several members of the soccer team say their coach was pressured into tendering her resignation. Mike Organ reports that senior soccer player Erica Carter said Howe told her and her roommate, junior Ashley Hudak, that athletics department officials had given her the choice to resign or be terminated because she had told the team her partner was pregnant. Howe is quoted in Belmont's official press release saying, "I am at a point in my life where I am satisfied to move on."

A subsequent press release from Belmont — a Christian university that severed its ties with the Tennessee Baptist Convention in 2007 — acknowledged "inaccuracies" in the first release and stated that Howe was leaving after she and the school reached a "mutual agreement."

Ask the coach's players, though, and they'll say it's more complicated than that. "She said she went to the administration to get permission to talk to us about [the pregnancy], so that she could bring us to light on her becoming a mother," Carter told the paper. "She didn't want us to hear it from other sources. She has never talked about her personal life before. We always hear rumors, speculation and things. She wanted this to come directly from her." Carter said Howe told her administrators did not immediately give her permission to address the team about the matter. She asked again several weeks later and still was not given permission."By then, people were finding out, so she went ahead and took the initiative and told us, even though they didn't clear her to tell us," Carter said.

On Sunday, approximately 45 protesters showed up in cold temperatures and snow flurries to call for "an international apology to gays and lesbians worldwide." But Belmont wasn't budging. "We do adhere to our values as Christ-centered, and we don't want to make apologies for that," Marty Dickens, chairman of the university's board of trustees, told The Tennessean.

In a press release sent to Outsports.com and other media outlets Tuesday from a law office representing her, Howe stated she would not comment on any topic related to Belmont, "other than to respectfully disagree with the suggestion ... made by Dickens "that being gay or lesbian is somehow 'immoral' or compromises Christian values at Belmont." She also indicated that she doesn't like being in the spotlight over personal matters. “No one wants their private family life made public or likes to think that people are talking about them, but I feel like I need to explain just a little about myself, for I have always held my head high and will continue to do so," she said. "I believe I am a good, moral person, who cares for others. Those and other basic Christian tenets are important to me, to how I live my life, including as a coach, and to what I want to teach my child as he or she grows up. I have never intentionally detracted from the goodness or holiness inherent in any person or institution, and I do my best not to judge people based on personal characteristics such as race, gender, religion, ability, or sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The situation has drawn the ire of many people, including members of the Belmont community in the traditionally conservative Bible Belt city of Nashville. The Tennessean reports that the university's Faculty Senate late Monday approved a resolution in support of gay members of the campus community. The resolution also invites administration officials to discuss the issue. "The Senate believes that the sexual identity of individuals should not impact that person's standing on campus," the resolution states.

SI.com's Jeff Pearlman claims the university has made a big mistake in the way it's handled the Howe case. "A good coach has lost her job because she's about to become a mother," he writes. "A good university has lost its reputation for the same reason."

I congratulate Belmont on their stand. It is time we end this 'political correcness' garbage and stand up for what is right (Christianity). That poor child, that will be raised in a house where the parents are of the same sex !
Comment By Tom At 12/8/2010 9:18 AM
The issue should be whether Howe is an effective coach. If she is, her sexual orientation is irrelevant.
Comment By Sharon At 12/8/2010 9:45 AM
As a Christ based institution. Belmont has done the right thing. The Bible teaches that it should be a man and a woman, and that it is a sin to have relations with the same sex. Belmont has followed God's commandments as a Christ based institution. It doesnt matter if the public thinks its right or wrong. They are trying to live by God's standards which are so much higher than ours.

Good for Belmont for standing up for their freedom of religion - which is what this is all about. As a Christian University, they have the right to require their employees to adhere to their stated beliefs and principals. Howe knew it was a christian university when she took the job there and it sounds like she understands that it is no longer a fit for her or the university to be employed there.
Comment By Cameron At 12/8/2010 11:19 AM
Coach Howe is no less a child of God than anyone on the planet. God created us all in his image and from what I hear doesn't make mistakes. Howe's sexuality is a natural as any other characteristic human's are born to. That some people don't want to accept this fact is about them - maybe they should start to think on their own and not let someone else interpret the Bible for them. It is clear her child will be raised in a home where honesty and integrity count and I am happy for the kid! Wouldn't it be wonderful if all children were raised in homes where the parents lived by principles and passed them on to their children. I encourage all heterosexuals who think they are more moral than gays and lesbians to look around them...at child abuse, alcoholism, adultery, drug use, etc., that heterosexuals are involved with and expose their children to. Get self righteous about THAT, go do something positive about that. Don't judge Coach Howe for who she loves. I'm pretty sure there's a Commandment about that. Bless you, Coach Howe.
Comment By Peg At 12/8/2010 11:20 AM
And you dont see gays and lesbians like that? You made a judgment b/c she was being attacked. I wasnt attacking her, but reacting to agreeing with Belmont's actions. I try and influence others daily my encouraging words and living the best I can. But maybe you need to examine the Bible. It does talk about homosexuality being a sin. Im sorry if you want to ignore or misinterpret it. But its there. Ive read it with my own 2 eyes. Belmont is in the right, and did the right thing.
Comment By Kyle Ryan At 12/8/2010 11:35 AM
The Bible also says lying, stealing, cursing, adultery, whoremongering, etc. are sins. Don't see Belmont firing coaches about any of THOSE sins...
Comment By Golden Kitten At 12/8/2010 12:23 PM
Belmont should be ashamed of itself as an institution of higher learning. While the institutin certainly has the right to practice a specific religous affiliation, the actions of the university send a message of hate and intolerance, especially on the heels of such tragic loss of young lives due to bullying and intolerance in our society. It is hypocritical to call yourself a christian and not show unconditional love and support for your neighbor. The bible was written by a bunch of white men and is consistently taken out of context for the purpose of promoting heterosexual and religioous agnedas. And you cannot deny that money and concerns of donors is the root concern for Belmont. If How is arespected coach and has been successful in her coaching career, the federal government should deny access to any funding, including financial aid, for students who choose to attend a discriminatory institution. In addition, institutions such as the NCAA and otehr college campuses should take a stand a boycott any intercollegiate competitions with Belmont. The instituiton of sport is one of the worst offenders in perpetuating stereotypes and intolerance. The time is now to champion all athletes, coaches, and spectators. Just like the civil rights, the gay movement will prevail and the south will again have their tail between their legs. Thank God I don't live in Tenessee.
Comment By Wendy At 12/8/2010 1:13 PM
Mam, Belmont is a private institution which is not supported by federal dollars. Therefore it has the right to do as it seems necessary. And mam, the Bible was written by the inspired words of God. And Belmont believes in those God inspired words. That is why they took the action. Also a school up north, called Notre Dame, its a private institution who believes in God. They have the right to do the same thing in the same situation if they so please. They still have the freedom to do those things. The govt can not tell them they cant either. And no one is going to 'boycott' and not play them.
Comment By Kyle Ryan At 12/8/2010 1:26 PM
Yeah, let's take a 2,000 year old book and apply it to modern day life. Yup thats smart. All you women making comments, pack your bags and head back home. Take off your shoes and get pregnant. Cause thats why the Bible says you should be doing. Obey your husband. Can we start stoning you too? From what I recall we were a nation of equality....apparently not. Your comments make us the Christian Iran. Nice! Because its those same Bible thumpers that rage against Iran. Well, you are their mirror image. Congrats for taking the U.S. to thrid world status. March on Christian solidier....
Comment By Realist At 12/8/2010 2:34 PM
You might be suprised at the results if you applied the Bible to modern life. For example Jesus teaches that hate towards another person is considered to be murder. That you are to honor your mother and father and not disrespect them. That Adultery is to lust after a woman. All of this is found in the Bible. Go read the Sermon on the Mount. Very inspiring. You want to try again? And I believe you are mistaken by the 'Bible thumpers' as you called us, are responsible for America going to a third world status. Its the greed of people not knowing how to live within their own means.

Just curious...how did her wife get pregnant? Those who claim homosexuality is natural deny the natural human form.

This Baptist school is in the right. Calling a spade a spade, not the doublespeak of today's rationalization of wrong behavior.
Comment By Juanita Valdez At 12/8/2010 5:33 PM
I respect that you feel that as a Christian school you have the right to take a stand on these matters.

What a lost opportunity for the college institution to go beyond personal religious beliefs and stand up for the personal beliefs of their staff.

The team knows what their coach stands for and they will walk away with renewed respect. People are who they are, and restricting their freedoms within your institution will never keep them from living their lives as they believe.

It is a sad day for Belmont! Great to see the faculty have stood up on this issue!!!!
Comment By Dolores Bayer At 12/8/2010 6:52 PM
belmont is pathetic; for an institution of supposed higher education to hold such short-sighted and inhumane values, in this day and age, well, that's southern hospitality for you; shame on you !!!!!!
Comment By phil bayer At 12/8/2010 6:56 PM
Why do you call it short sighted and inhumane values? Christ's followers are to seek the things God seeks, not the things of the world. As a Christian institution, I would hope they wouldnt have teachers who do not follow God's law teaching in a Christian Institution. Sir, Im sorry if you do not agree with God's laws, but someone who doesnt want to try and follow His laws, should not be teaching or coaching in an institution that is centered around God. So it wouldnt be short sighted, it would be trying to seek beyond what the world tells you, and seek God's will!

Hey Coach.....move to Canada where we are much more tolerant + we are a top 10 soccer nation! The ONLY way this makes sense is if it was written in her initial contract to abide by these 'biblical standards' (which is horse #$%^ as I don't need to live by the bible to have faith and my own beliefs). Assuming there was wording in there, then this is more of a employment violation than it is a slap in the face of God. And yes, Tom is a moron and it is people like him that make the majority of the south look like fools.
Comment By Canadian At 12/11/2010 11:38 AM
I am christian and know that Christ himself would have shown love for her. The christianity that is being displayed here is that of the Pharisees. It was Christ, not the Pharisees who supped with the outcasts of society. What makes me laugh is those who hide behind Bibles and flags, yet espouse love of guns and hate of others. Who is kidding who? Yes, your judgement day will come.

Romans:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

First off, I am only 14 years old writing this argument, and already I can tell how irretrievably brainwashed and damaged our society is. Second, I respect each and every one of you for your arguments and opinions. This is simply my own thoughts on the subject, and you do not have to read this, but I believe I may have some very interesting thoughts. Many of you are arguing about whether or not God or Christianity or the Bible states whether or not being same-sex oriented is, shall we say, “moral”. Let me say that not everyone on this godforsaken planet is Christian, and do not get it into your heads that they are. Christianity may be a big religion with many followers, but it is certainly not the only religion out there. Also, just because Belmont is a Christian school means absolutely nothing. I will bet my life that there are students attending Belmont that are not Christian; so should they be exiled from the school forever? Do they dirty up Belmont’s picture-perfect Christian name? And does anyone here know for a fact that Belmont’s supervisors and superintendents and school board members are even Christian? My point is here that if the entire school is not dedicated to Christianity, then why does each and every one of the members, student or adult, of Belmont University need to abide by the Christian laws forced upon them? And adding on to that, does anyone even know if Coach Howe was Christian? Heck, she taught at a Christian school, but she taught soccer. She is under no law that says she needs to be a Christian, abide by Christianity, and not be same-sex oriented. Stay with me, there is more. Before I make this next statement, you’ll have to excuse my language. Fuck the Bible. You Christians have no other proof besides that book that Jesus Christ, son of God, actually exists, or that God actually exists. You have yet to have any miracle nowadays to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this “god” actually exists. If there is no proof that any of this exists, why take its word for granted? Just because something is stated in the Bible does not make it moral or just. Ever think about that? Screw the Bible. This nation (which, by the way, was not created “under God” as we all deem it to be) gave us rights. Every man is created equal, and we all have the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Every man is created equal. As far as I’m concerned, most of the arguments before mine slam that law down. They say we are not created equal and that gays and lesbians have no place on this earth. Well, then, my friend, you have no place on this earth, for you are not created equal, therefore are not able to live on the planet Earth, as you have so stated that gays and lesbians are and must do. And the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness? Is Coach Howe getting that? Is she allowed the right of liberty, to keep her job no matter her state of pregnancy or sexual orientation? Is Coach Howe allowed to pursue happiness? Under the reign of God, she is not, apparently. Under the reign of God, Coach Howe is banished to the tormenting grounds of Hell for all eternity. These are our rights, and yet those who hate on Coach Howe take away those rights, forbade us from every getting to live the life we were allowed the day we were born.

If you took the hypocrisy out of religions, there'd be nothing left to proselytize.

A Christian University has every right to uphold is Christian values for staff as well as students. Coach Howe has the every right to live her life outside Christian values somewhere else. She unfortunately complicated her life and those of her players when she intentionally choose to blend the two.

The Bible says that its teachings are 'foolishness' to those who aren't able to discern spiritual things which is so clearly displayed in many of these responses.

God no more causes someone to be gay than He causes someone to get cancer or be addicted to alcohol or drugs. These and other disorders because of the deterioration of the human condition (as well as choice) since God's original design 2000+ years ago.

As a Christian, I would not 'hate' Coach Howe at all. I would mourn the loss of her eternal salvation because of her decision to live a gay lifestyle. This is the same outcome as anyone who chooses to live outside of God's commands whether for heterosexual adultery or any other sin not repented of. We are still called to love our 'neighbor' but that does not mean we have to condone what is obviously against God's moral expectations. She has the right to choose to live outside that code and experience the eternal consequences as we all do. She does not have the right do so while working in a Christian institution.

I laugh at your response to my argument 'Elena's Dad' (you who are no father of mine). I laugh because have you no argument of your own? Have you nothing to say to me except to point out the fact that I am 'clueless'? This is why I laugh, you have no rebuttal of your own, but to substitute for your lack of knowledge, you can only make fun of me and my thoughts. I feel sorry for you. But you must realize this. Everyone on this earth was given a life by your so-called 'God'. Is not everyone entitled to the life they were given? Must we constantly hate and bring down the people around us, the people who are, coincidentally, our brothers and sisters? You who is so full of hate and prejudice cannot even begin to fathom the effect you have, on your nation and on yourself. Let me ask you: ever in your unmistakably small life, has any homosexual ever done anything to hurt you? To criticize you? To spit hateful things in your face? I will answer the question for you, for you and I both know the answer. They have not. Your prejudice against the homosexual build off one thing and one thing only: fear. Fear because you fear that somehow they are immoral or disgusting or filthy. Maybe you fear them because you are a homosexual yourself, and are too ashamed to admit it. They are as much a human being as you and I are, as anyone is. Have you ever thought of that? Has not 'God' taught you that every being on this planet was put here for a purpose? Let me leave you with a thought, a thought which I have already stated, but I believe it needs emphasis: what have they ever done to you?
Comment By Elena At 12/8/2011 6:20 PM
Way to stick to your guns, Elena! I'm hopeful for the world when someone your age can write so eloquently to the problems facing our world, and view them with such heartfelt compassion. Stick to it! Change will come!
Comment By Annie At 12/9/2011 9:38 AM
Just like every other person who writes here and espouses their opinions, and backs the courage of those convictions, Elena has that right, regardless of her age.

For 14yrs old, she makes a pretty reasonable argument.

She shouldn't be denigrated for it.

I believe homosexuality/gay is abnormal, but to me that only makes them different. Not a 'bad' different - just different.

They are no more immoral, bad, unclean, non-religious etc than any other human being.

It's their sexual preference that is different, that's it, that's all.

'Judge not, lest ye not be judged'; 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone'; 'We're all God's children' etc etc.

Where are those values and teachings whenever issues like this that we're discussing come along?
Comment By Mark At 12/9/2011 11:19 AM
Elena - you might be right. We Christians have no proof that God exists. But we do have FAITH that He does exist. We choose to believe because we choose to believe a book that was written long ago just like some other books that are old. However, you say there are no miracles today to prove there is a God. We see miracles all the time. Haven't you ever heard someone say when they escaped certain death or accident - 'It was a miracle I wasn't killed.' Or 'I can't believe I made it through that, it must have been a miracle'. Well, maybe it was God or your guardian angel that saved you! Granted we don't know for sure. But I'll tell you this - when you and I die we will find out who is right. Oh yes, even though I am a Christian I don't know if beiing homosexual is sinful or not for reasons too lengthy to discuss here. But again, one day I believe I will find the answer to that issue as well.
Comment By DM At 12/9/2011 1:44 PM
God does not call us to condone and accept obvious sin and that in itself is not espousing hate. Jesus didn't accept it or condone sin and as Christians, He is our example. He lovingly called those WHO WERE WILLING to 'repent, go and sin no more'... and offered them forgiveness and salvation if they did so. It was very conditional. He did not accept blatent sinfulness of hard hearted individuals who didn't didn't believe who He was or what he taught because they were deceived by Satan. He allowed them to make their choice and experience the consequence. God's standards remain whether we choose to believe them in the 21st century or not. The consequences still remain as well.
