On Tuesday, May 7, the City of Huntsville celebrated the grand opening of its newly expanded soccer facility at the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex at John Hunt Park.

The addition of two synthetic turf fields and other improvements expanded the 20-acre championship sports facility. The fields are multipurpose and capable of hosting soccer, lacrosse, disc golf, and other field sports.

The expanded facility was dedicated in recognition of former Huntsville Mayor Loretta P. Spencer. Spencer was mayor of Huntsville from 1996 to 2008. [Huntsville Business Journal]

Village leaders in southwest suburban New Lenox have broken ground on a new 100-acre sports complex.

Located near Silver Cross Hospital, the New Lenox Crossroads Sports Complex facility will include 29 youth baseball and softball fields, 12 soccer/multi-use fields, a welcome center, a beer garden, batting cages, playground, and concession stands all expected to open and ready for tournaments in spring of 2025.

An extensive drainage system will allow the turf fields to be ready for play just minutes after heavy rain, according to JLG Architects, which designed the facility. [CBS News]

The new Ottawa YMCA will be open for business to members and the general public at 5 a.m. on Monday, May 13.

Ottawa YMCA Executive Director Joe Capece, during a tour Monday, said that aside from a small metal sheeting issue on the exterior and a few landscaping touch ups, the $26.5 million, newly-constructed Y has received its certificate of occupancy from the city of Ottawa and will be ready to serve the public one week hence.
