Emily (emily@athleticbusiness.com) joined the Athletic Business team in 2011, a natural transition from her previous work at PFP (Personal Fitness Professional), a B2B fitness industry brand, and Inside Wisconsin Sports, a consumer sports publication. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Emily continues to enjoy living in the city with her husband Derek, making cheese, drinking beer and biking to work, except during winter, when she doesn't enjoy much of anything.

    The inaugural issue of Athletic Business — published under the name Athletics Purchasing and Facilities in April 1977 — was a buyers guide. Every year since then, Athletic Business has continued to assemble the leading purchasing resource for the athletics, fitness and recreation industries. This year, AB went a step further to provide not only the who and where, but the what and how much. We surveyed health clubs, military installations, high schools, colleges, YMCAs and other organizations large and small (386 in total) to learn about purchasing and budget trends.

As the story goes, founder Fenton Kelsey Jr. was working to construct an indoor ice arena in Madison, Wis., but couldn't find any references to guide him through the construction process or future management. So he decided to create one.

    Security Preparations for the Cubs' World Series Win

    One hundred and eight years. That's how long the Chicago Cubs had gone without a World Series championship prior to this past fall's Game 7 extra-inning win over the Cleveland Indians. The crowds were ecstatic, to say the least, yet in an age when sports fans' revelry can quickly turn into rioting (just two years prior to the Cubs' win, rowdy San Francisco Giants fans ignited chaos when they lit a couch on fire), the closest Cubs fans came to destruction was covering the walls and streets around Wrigley with chalked dedications.

    The NCAA's investigation into conduct of the Ole Miss football program has concluded, resulting in eight additional charges to the notice of allegations and a self-imposed one-year bowl ban, the university announced on Wednesday. In addition, the school will forfeit $7.8 million in postseason revenue.

    An abundance of sunshine made up for the slight chill in the air as AB Show attendees boarded the bus to University of Central Florida. Undeterred by the 7:30 am start time, the mix of tourists hailed from as far as Hawaii (5 hours behind) and Taipei (13 hours behind!) and was excited to see what Central Florida had to offer.
