A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Emily continues to enjoy living in the city with her husband Derek, making cheese, drinking beer and biking to work, except during winter, when she doesn't enjoy much of anything.

    Chicago Marathon Organizers Share Tips for Event Safety

    This past October, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon saw approximately 45,000 participants. The day started with clear skies and a temperature in the mid 50s, climbing into the 70s as the day progressed. The first men's and women's runners crossed the finish line at 2:09:25 and 2:23:23, respectively, and throughout the course of the day, 45 competitors were taken to the hospital and many more treated at aid stations located throughout the course.

    Factors Affecting Air Quality in Aquatic Centers

    Maintaining an indoor aquatic center is no easy task, as anyone in the position of owning or operating one well knows. Every aspect must be carefully maintained to minimize the possibility of injury or illness and maximize the user's experience. Poor air quality in the natatorium environment can result in both — increased illness risk and decreased user comfort. Ongoing problems can also contribute to the deterioration of the facility itself, leading to costly repairs down the road.

    Basketball Court Design as Branding Tool

    Remember when the University of Oregon changed the look of college basketball with its evergreen-silhouetted court at Matthew Knight Arena in 2011? Or when Florida International University's beach-towel-themed court raised some eyebrows in 2013? The two are notable examples in a growling list of unique court designs. past summer, the University of Maryland unveiled its new flag-bordered design at the XFINITY Center; Northern Kentucky University unveiled a floor "watermarked" with a Norse ship at BB&T Arena; and a handful of NBA teams unveiled new court designs. "Over the past four or five years, there's been a tremendous focus for branding opportunities on basketball courts and getting your message out," says John Prater, president of Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Praters Athletic Flooring, the creative spark behind some of college athletics' most iconic basketball courts.

While anyone working in the fitness industry recognizes the impact exercise and activity has on health, the specific medical connection hasn't been a point of emphasis. And in the healthcare industry, the focus for too long was geared more toward treating illness than encouraging holistic wellness.

Undeterred by the 7:30 am start time, the mix of tourists hailed from as far as Hawaii (5 hours behind) and Taipei (13 hours behind!) and was excited to see what Central Florida had to offer.
