If it is similar to a Taraflex (aka synthetic) floor you can use an auto scrubber everyday. You can even flood the floor and let it 'soak' to help. Wood floors you need to be careful about the aggressiveness of the chemicals you use and you can't ever leave freestanding water on the surface.
edited by evan_adams on 6/2/2011

While using a power scrubber on a floor with years and years of finish most likely will not cause any damage. On newer floors it is a definite no-no.

The use of power scrubbing equipment may void warranties administered by your maple flooring system manufacturer and/or sport floor contractor. Before incorporating general maintenance procedures for your gym floor, the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association strongly recommends reviewing your warranty and maintenance information provided to you by your sport floor contractor and/or maple manufacturer.

The use of automated power scrubbing equipment for general, daily, or weekly maintenance procedures may lead to specific side effects listed below.

Possible effects to maple floor boards

Shaling
Splintering
Excessive shrinkage and expansion
Splitting of individual pieces of wood flooring
Raised or Uneven sides
Cupping

Possible effects to the floor finish and paint

Premature/excessive finish wear
Chipping and peeling of paint and finish
Swirl marks in the finish
Dull finish appearance

We have been using a power scrubber on our floor for the last 10 yrs and haven't had any issues with it. Alot of it could be the amount of pressure that is put down on the scrubbing brushes, but those are usually adjustable, depending on your model of floor scrubber. We also have our floor refinished every year so that helps save our floor as well. I've talked to our floor people (Northern Hardwood, Spokane) and they have actually recommended using the floor scrubber, it does a more thorough job then doing it by hand.

Ted Stein, Director
Centra Athletic Center, MT

I have heard differing opinions regarding the use of a power scrubber on the gym floor. The power scrubber that we have will force the cleaner (water) on the gym floor and has a scrub pad that cleans. Is this hard on floor and finish or is it appropriate to use a power scrubber on the gym floor?

Kevin Simmerman, Activities Director
Fairbury Jr-Sr High School, Nebraska
