<description><![CDATA[BODY ART & TATTOO: SDSU does not allow lifeguards to have inappropriate body art or tattoos, such as tattoos that contain illegal drug or alcohol references, violent scenes, weapons, nudity or sex. These must be covered, with a large band-aid or wrap at all times while on duty.    Our policy says "neatness in appearance and safety are of high priority; other aspects of dress shall be governed by supervisors in consultation with employees in the area. The supervisor should attempt to solicit group consensus and set guidelines for dress that meet the requirements for safety, appearance, and image".    An attorney consulted said we should a) consider the demographics and those being served and ask the following questions: Why is it an issue? How is the issue generated? Can we have the same rule across the board (for all of Campus Rec). b) Is it discriminatory against a cultural, religious our personal belief. c) Is it offensive to the population we serve?    Based on the above information as well as reviewing a few recent court case (one in which Costco did not allow an employee to wear an eyebrow piercing, the employee sued and Costco won) on the topic, as long as there is consistent application of the policy, you should be ok.<br><br><div class='signature'>Eric Huth, Recreation Director<br>San Diego State Univ., California</div>]]></description>

Your “look” should be wrapped into the overall performance of your assessment of your staff for maximum impact.
