I am looking for policy info on gym use by employee resident faculty children (who are not students at our school)using our weight room and gym when the gym is "closed" and not supervised by anyone. The resident gives the children a master key to enter the facility nights, weekends, and holiday breaks. Any boarding school gym use policies that may help would be appreciated as well as any guidelines/enforcement information. What is the liability when this use is approved by the resident faculty (who is an administrator, but not present in the gym supervising the use)? Thanks for any thoughts/input. Julie Dayton

I would be very concerned with children using your facility when there is no supervision. In particular allowing weight use. I do not know if this helps, but since the facility is closed after hours I would devise a policy that would not allow anyone to use this facility if it os closed...period. If residents continue this practice perhaps developing a liablity form would help as well. This but any responsiblity for potential injuries in the hands of the people who are allowing access to this facility during closing hours.

Our weightroom policy would be to provide a trainer if the children are over 14. If they are under 16, they must have the parents' accompaniment. All would require a waiver. No one under 14 can use the weightroom. The gym would have the same age and waiver requirements. There would also be a facility attendant for first aid. Your administrator would have to have the same quals as the other staff to supervise as well as a criminal record check.
