My son was at a Minnesota Junior College this past year. We had met with the coach and toured the school before admitting. My son received a brochure for fundraising in the summer before school in the fall. He tried out and made the team. Because of academic problems he was suspended from the basketball team for the second half of the season. He then received a bill for $250.00 for personal property/service charge. After talking with the basketball coach he told me that at the beginning of the season he mailed every player the fundraising brochure. He asked the team as a whole how much they would like to raise. The guys said $500.00 would be their goal. Because my son wasn't on the team the second half of the season and didn't raise any money with the fundraising he is submitting a bill for $250.00. I asked to see the fundraising information to see where it stated that the players would be obligated for the $500.00 if they didn't get the funds through fundraising. I also asked for a contract that was signed by my son stating he would be responsible. The fundraising information shows nothing to this affect not can the school show my anything that was signed by my son saying he would be responsible. The school is now sending my son a bill for $250.00. I asked for an itemized bill showing what they are charging for. They have supplied me with the following: Iowa Hotel & Bus $176.01, basketball shoes $94.29, Chicago bus and meal money $175.00, and Bemidji meal money $12.86 for a total of $458.16. I believe the basketball shoes were donated. I believe there was a failure to disclose this information to the players before that basketball season. No player has a signed contract holding them responsible for the fundraising. Doesn't the school have a budget that covers the cost of the all sports? How can they turn around after the fact and charge the student/athletes for hotels, bus, meal money, and basketball shoes? In talking with the coach prior to the season there was no mention to myself or my son that he would be responsible for any charges related to the basketball program. I would like to know what Minnesota NJCAA rules are regarding this type of practice? Now that these student's have a bill they are told they will not be allowed to enroll in any school until this bill is paid. Please help!!!
