MIAMI TWP. - Dayton Christian School has raised $1.7 million toward plans to build a gymnasium, what one official called "probably one of the most important projects at this point in our history."

The private school in Miami Twp. has never had a general assembly facility in its 54 years. The 31,000 square foot addition that will seat 600 - to be named the Warriors Center - is expected to cost $6 million and will have a long-term impact on students, faculty and the community, said John Gredy, director of development and community relations at Dayton Christian.

"We don't have a large space where we can have a large general assembly. So this school has been needing a gymnasium....," Gredy said. "This is a long-awaited project."

Gredy on Monday announced a capital campaign to fund the project.

"You know it's going to meet a lot of needs - physical education space, general assembly space, as well as to be able to bring the Warriors home to play their scholastic sports competitions there in our gymnasium," he added. "So the Warrior Center is extremely important to this.

"This is for the kids," Gredy said later, "... This is for them and their future and future generations. So this is probably one of the most important project at this point in our history."

The 203,000 square foot school houses about 900 K-12 students on 45 acres at the intersection of Washington Church Road and Spring Valley Pike, where it has been located for about 15 years.

Yet Gredy said the winter athletic teams have sometimes had to travel up to 20 miles for home games. Currently, those home games take place at Miami Valley School and Miamisburg Middle School, said Dayton Christian spokeswoman Julie Thompson.

The campaign's announcement followed a balloon launch featuring hundreds of students gathered outside the school around the gym's future site.

"It's going to be an awesome opportunity," said Paul Pyle, a 1974 Dayton Christian grad at Bible teacher at the school. "It's time to bring the Warriors home."

Gredy said "we wanted momentum today and I think we got it. With our children, they are so excited about this future project and to see their enthusiasm."

In the next 40 days Dayton Christian needs to raise "60 percent of $4 million" to allow officials to be break ground this summer with the target of opening the gym in the fall of 2018, Gredy said.

Reaching the goal of $6 million would finance the gym. Whether that some would pay for other amenities - such as a wellness center - is not yet known. Gredy said.
