A series of soffits allow mechanical and electrical systems to be routed along the perimeter, thus maximizing ceiling height in activity areas.

Ethos Fitness Spa for Women

Midland Park, NJ

Year in Showcase: 2007

Project Description

Located in the basement of a 1960s strip mall, this women’s fitness club and day spa manages to provide an upscale wellness experience. Ethos offers an array of amenities for members’ comfort and enjoyment.

These include two multipurpose studios for group exercise and yoga, a Pilates/KinesisTM area, a cardio exercise area, fitness and strength-training equipment, a fireside lounge, a café, a steam room, a conference room, on-site child care, a day spa with five treatment rooms and centrally located locker rooms.

The space presented such major challenges as lack of daylight, significant noise transmission from above and limited ceiling height. Each was addressed in the design, which incorporates custom-fixture and candle lighting, an extensive sound-treatment system and a series of soffits that rout mechanical and electrical systems along the building’s perimeter.

The Ethos color scheme combines earth tones of brown, tan, sienna, olive, charcoal and slate blue to create a natural and soothing environment. The club has a sleek, contemporary aesthetic, but does not feel austere because of the warm wood tones used throughout.
