Nova Southeastern University — University Center, Renovation and Expansion

Fort Lauderdale, FL

Year in Showcase: 2007

Project Description

The University Center at Nova Southeastern University was conceived as a mixed-use hub of student, faculty and public activity. Located in the heart of campus, the center forms a link between residential and academic zones — its atrium spine fostering awareness of campus athletic, recreational and social activities.

Exterior design elements respect the existing campus palette of glass and precast concrete, and high-activity spaces are visible from the exterior both day and night through abundant glazing. Three levels house fitness areas, racquetball courts, a two-court gymnasium, a climbing wall, multipurpose rooms, lockers and support spaces. In addition, the center encloses an existing but upgraded recreational pool and sundeck, as well as facilities for social events.

The innovative arena accommodates concerts, commencements and other events, while providing a suitable environment for NSU’s intercollegiate basketball and volleyball programs. The lower arena bowl seats 1,250 spectators and includes a VIP lounge with premium seating. Upper-level seating expands the venue’s capacity to 5,400 but can be sealed off using 30-foot-high stacking partitions to create an intimate, vibrant atmosphere for smaller crowds.
