North Arundel Aquatic Center

Glen Burnie, MD

Year in Showcase: 2008

Project Description

Based on a limited construction budget, this facility’s layout and design showcase simplicity and efficiency. The building is divided into two zones — the entry/support zone and the high-volume pool zone, which is enhanced by abundant natural lighting and views to the municipal park property on which the building sits. Delicate roof bracket features allow the facility to mesh with the natural park characteristics.

The aquatic component consists of a family-oriented recreation zone and a separate zone designed for both lap swimming and competitions. The family area has been designed for children, older citizens and others who prefer warm water (86 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit). A zerodepth- entry area includes an engaging water sculpture and fountains, a slide and a variety of interactive features designed to create an ever-changing, kinetic element for the facility. A three-turn water slide and spinning water vortex complete the beach area.

Three lap lanes provide an environment for group aquatic therapy classes, while the fitness and competition pool provides cooler water for athletes.
