University Center Renovation and Expansion - Nova Southeastern University

Fort Lauderdale, FL

Year in Showcase: 2008

Project Description

The University Center at Nova Southeastern University was conceived as a mixed-use hub of student, faculty and public activity. Located at the heart of campus and linking residential and academic zones, the facility houses recreation, athletics and performing arts components.

The exterior design respects the existing campus palette of glass and precast concrete, and takes as its inspiration the diverse functions of the building. Tall activity spaces are visible from the exterior both day and night.

Inside, the galleria spine is the primary organizing element and the focus of all social activity for both spectators and participants. The synergy of different types of activities allows for more amenities than could be justified within an individual recreation center, student union, performing arts building or conference center.

Three levels of dedicated fitness facilities include cardiovascular fitness and strength training spaces, racquetball courts, a two-court gymnasium and a climbing wall. The center also features a new enclosure for an upgraded recreational pool with a sundeck and facilities for social events.
