The Monon Center and Outdoor Aquatic Facility

Carmel, IN

Year in Showcase: 2008

Project Description

Built into the planted hillsides of Carmel’s 160-acre Central Park, the Monon Center affords a range of recreational opportunities in a stunning setting. Building components were strategically placed to reduce impact to the site, which is located in the Carmel Creek watershed and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The building is marked by strong geometry, large open volumes within, and panoramic views to the outdoors.

The multifaceted community center contains an indoor natatorium featuring a leisure pool and a six-lane recreational lap pool, a three-court gymnasium, health/fitness areas, an indoor children’s play zone, a café, administrative offices and a banquet room. It is augmented by a companion 2,098-bather-capacity outdoor aquatic center that features a zero-depth-entry activity pool; a four-lane, recreational lap pool; a lazy river, “kiddie” pool and children’s sprayground; two large water slides; a deep pool with a 1-meter diving board and drop slide; and a bathhouse and concessions area.

The building’s design was influenced by the interurban Monon Trail greenway route that runs through the site. The Monon Center structure features an enclosed pedestrian bridge that spans the trail and links the site’s passive and active programming spaces.
