University of Florida Baseball Locker Room and Lemerand Center Renovation

Gainesville, FL

Year in Showcase: 2008

Project Description

The expansion of the University of Florida’s baseball stadium and team training facilities required fitting 1,400 spectator seats, an expanded concourse, an indoor pitching and batting workout area, team locker and equipment areas, coaches’ offices, a concessions stand and restrooms, and a renovated maintenance building and irrigation well within a 250-by-150- foot area down the existing stadium’s left-field line.

A generous lobby celebrates the national recognition of past Gator teams and provides views to the baseball field and its large scoreboard. Coaches’ offices also are laid out to provide views of the fi eld and stadium. The locker room incorporates clerestory windows to bring in natural daylight without compromising valuable wall space for wood lockers, flat-panel TVs and coaches’ marker boards.

The exterior of the project includes a makeover of the existing stadium, a monochromatic mix of concrete and gray concrete block. To match other athletic department buildings composed predominantly of brick, the new construction also includes a brick exterior that was extended onto portions of the stadium and maintenance building, unifying all elements with a rich color and texture. The new building’s solid brick forms are further broken with a large expanse of glass at the entrance, which is oriented toward a spectator plaza.
