Maverick Activities Center Renovation and Expansion - University of Texas at Arlington

Arlington, TX

Year in Showcase: 2008

Project Description

Constructed in 1962, the original UTA Activity Building was a windowless brick box with no sense of entry and seemingly endless interior corridors. Impressing the judges was the completeness of its renovation and expansion into the Maverick Activities Center. Open corridors providing social spaces and an abundance of natural light transform the feel of the facility, which now boasts a four-court gymnasium encircled by a suspended track, a 22,000-square-foot fitness zone, multipurpose rooms, a computer lounge and food service components. A soaring entry and glass facade provide panoramic campus views for facility users and internal views of the fitness zone for passersby. A three-story atrium fills the spine of the building with natural light, while wood and terrazzo wall and floor finishes are accented with colorful furnishings and sports graphics, all of which contribute to the facility’s vibrant sense of health and wellness.
