University of Texas Pan American Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex

Edinburg, TX

Year in Showcase: 2008

Project Description

Unique to the University of Texas Pan American is the consistency of the campus architectural style, which emulates that of Louis Kahn, one of the foremost architects of the 20th century. Some of the strongest features of this style are exhibited in the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex, including two-story building massing, tan brick, brightly colored exterior accents, recessed windows and entrances that create strong building shadows, arched openings and patterned masonry walls created through the use of plane changes.

The complex is designed to showcase movement, reducing the amount of staffing needed. Both the lobby and the control desk are afforded panoramic views of almost all major activity spaces, including views of weight and fitness areas, the climbing wall, the track, racquetball courts and lounge space. Locker rooms are located directly behind the control desk, readily accessible by staff and patrons. Lounge spaces are also centrally located with dynamic views to various activity areas.

Durable materials were selected to stand up to the high level of use. On the first floor, walls of tan brick and painted concrete block were used in spaces with the heaviest use. Terrazzo was used in high-traffic areas. School colors of orange and green were the starting point for a colorful, lively scheme that reflects the culture of the South Texas location.
