Grumbacher Sports and Fitness Center - York College of Pennsylvania

York, PA

Year in Showcase: 2008

Project Description

The Grumbacher Sports and Fitness Center drew comparisons to a machine — a sleek, sophisticated and well-oiled one, at that. Judges pointed to the building’s restrained elevations, site integration and clarity of circulation. In plan, the building is an orthogonal structure to the south with a curved northern wing addressing athletic fields. The flat-roofed north pavilion boasts a curved facade that maximizes views to the fields, while the southern portion — home to the field house, arena and natatorium — features an arching roofline spanned by custom-designed steel trusses with skylights above. Accommodating student fitness facilities as well as the college’s athletics programs, the center features a long light-filled interior corridor that bisects the building and serves as a link between the main campus and an expanding campus in a former industrial zone. Green strategies included the recycling of structural components from industrial buildings that were demolished to clear the site.
