Ambler Area YMCA

Ambler, PA

Year in Showcase: 2011

Project Description

The Y building, a softball diamond and two outdoor pavilions represent Phase One of a four-phase project on this 27-acre site, which will also see an outdoor aquatic center, a second gymnasium and a separate 30,000-square-foot addition to the new Y.

Inside the Y, a two-story lobby and reception area provides a spacious, upscale and warm environment for social interaction. The focal point of the facility is an indoor aquatic center featuring a family fun pool with two water spray features, multiple waterslides, a warm-water pool, a six-lane lap pool, a whirlpool and a sauna, all surrounded by laminated timber beams and stone walls.

The 11,000-square-foot wellness center includes two group exercise rooms and a dedicated group cycling room. The mezzanine level features an interactive gaming center, as well as an open fitness area. With a greater emphasis on family needs, an expanded childcare area is designed to mirror the play spaces of licensed childcare centers, while providing additional opportunities for fun and play. A “Family Active Center” allows parents to work out while watching their children play. Another family-friendly feature is a 10-stall, four-restroom family locker room that allows families or special-needs members to change into bathing suits in private, while a common area includes lockers and a baby changing area.

Comments:

I think the facility is nice, but not an efficient use of space. In the front lobby, there is a giant "flower bed" that takes up much of the common space towards the front desks. This disrupts the flow of traffic and prevents people from congregating (although this may have been the goal of putting something there to prohibit people from "hanging out" in front of the front desks). The rooms that are designated for kids activities are small and there are not enough of them to go around. As well, some of the classrooms empty out onto the indoor track area, making it difficult for those running to avoid hitting those people coming out. We used to be members at the Greater Plymouth Community Center, but dropped that because we moved. It was a much better use of space, which allowed them to schedule better programming.

I love the pool......I wish there weren't SO much chlorine but I guess it must take a certain about to keep a communal pool clean. Beautifully done pools, locker rooms, etc.
