YMCA of Martha's Vineyard

Vineyard Haven, Mass.

Year in Showcase: 2011

Project Description

Situated among beautiful beaches, nature preserves and historic New England villages, the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard is a centrally located community center supporting youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The first phase of the project, envisioned to be approximately 50,000 square feet when all phases are completed, includes an indoor family aquatics center, a fitness center, group exercise studios and facilities dedicated to children, teens and older adults.

The two-story building is organized around a main spine. Visitors can view all activity spaces from the spine, composed of the lobby and main hallway. The efficient design and shape of the building provides an abundance of daylight, creating a natural aesthetic while significantly reducing lighting costs. Two-story windows provide a welcoming environment and impressive views of the surrounding pine forest, helping connect visitors to the lush, natural surroundings of Martha’s Vineyard. The design of the shed roof creates a natural ventilation system, resulting in improved air circulation and further reduction in energy costs.

Recycled cork was used in the flooring and in youth areas, while wood shingles were employed as the primary exterior sheathing. Composite materials and reclaimed plastics were used for the sills, lockers and toilet partition systems, and wood decking used to create the ceiling represents a renewable resource that also gives the facility a warmer feel.

Comments:

You know, I would never have guessed that there were so many people in Martha's Vineyard in need of the services of the the YMCA. Are there people there who need free or reduced cost daycare? Head Start programs perhaps? People who couldn't afford a traditional health club? People in need of the support and services provided for in the mission statement of the YMCA?
