Burleson Recreation Center

Burleson, Texas

Year in Showcase: 2012

Project Description

The Burleson Recreation Center succeeds in helping the City of Burleson rebrand its image from an old "cow and grain" town into a contemporary Texas suburban community with state-of-the-art recreation amenities.

The design premise is centered on making visual connections between the various spaces from both outside and inside the building. From inside the lobby, one can observe almost every main activity area, including a climbing wall, gymnasium, pool, jogging track, and aerobics, fitness and babysitting areas. Additional features include recreation department offices, lounge and vending spaces, party rooms and a health evaluation exam room.

A dynamic exterior facade provides vistas of the aquatics, fitness and jogging components through large windows. Visitors can also see the second-level fitness center as they approach from street level. Per the city's request, the exterior design employs classic Texas materials such as limestone walls and piers, corrugated galvanized "silver" metal roofing and siding, and heavy timber construction. The project also involved collaboration with the local school district to include an additional three competition swim lanes and a swim team ready room.
