Park City MARC Renovation and Addition

Park City, Utah

Year in Showcase: 2012

Project Description

Park City residents are avid skiers, hikers, cyclists and lovers of the outdoors. Begun as a remodel of the existing Park City Racquet Club and including the first-phase addition of an outdoor leisure pool and deck, the Park City MARC (municipal activity recreation facility) now serves to supplement the community’s lifestyle.

Views of the surrounding majestic Wasatch mountains are used to full advantage, and daylighting penetrates deep into the new MARC. Interior glass walls allow for expansive views between activity spaces, while the running track circulates through the tennis and cardio fitness areas. The courts are specifically calibrated to compensate for Park City’s 7,000-foot elevation, and two of them offer court lines facilitating tennis development among children age 5 to 12. Remaining key components include aerobics rooms, a soft arts studio, a group cycling studio, climbing facilities for adults and children, a pro shop and a game room — all planned around a main lobby circulation space.

"Cloud" ceilings are used throughout the main spaces to allow views to the structure above while providing acoustical benefits. The steel structure’s red accents are complemented by muted green, yellow and orange on walls, furniture and carpeting. Steel elements are expressed throughout the exterior as a tribute to Park City's industrial past.
