Family Wellness

Fargo, N.D.

Year in Showcase: 2012

Project Description

The Sanford YMCA's new facility is organized into simple and distinct quadrants, with all main program areas directly accessible from the lobby. An elevated three-lane track allows traffic below to flow unrestricted between fitness areas, gymnasium space and locker rooms on the main level. Large two-story windows allow natural light into the fitness and track space, while also giving users panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The interior palette of materials includes brick masonry, burnished block, painted drywall and large graphic wall coverings. Warm, natural maple wood tones with metallic accents are used throughout. Railings at the monumental stair and at the elevated track include painted steel verticals with stainless rails and cable infill, creating a strong horizontal feel and providing a sleek and contemporary look. A cantilevered painted steel canopy frame with wire mesh insert panels defines the space above the front desk and helps provide dimension in the large-volume space.

Exterior materials cues were taken from the existing Scheels Arena and surrounding athletic park. Four red-brick masonry towers anchor the main fitness area and provide relief from the expansive curtainwall. Dark gray brick is used at the infill areas and at the entry. Metallic silver and gray metal panels complete the exterior color palette.
