The Multiplex

Grande Prairie, Alta.

Year in Showcase: 2012

Project Description

This facility has been designed to fit the site, region and neighborhood. A collaborative design process has ensured that the new facility allows residents to compete at a premier level and attract the best events in Canada.
The organization and general design concept centered on clarity and opportunity. The immense size and combination of new and existing structures advocated for a boulevard concept to organize activities and allow ease of identification, expectation and wayfinding. The organization starts with a welcome from the reception desk, which offers direct access to the changing rooms and Gymniks facility, as well as the option to further explore along the main concourse.

Primary importance was given to providing maximum daylight access while maintaining environments free of glare and hotspots that may affect users or staff. Clerestories and translucent glazing infuse all areas of the multiplex with northern light and a comforting natural ambiance. One of the most striking features that users encounter is the theming of the aquatics center around the prehistoric artifacts and historical materials that mark the region.

Another essential element in the evolution of this multiplex was the decision to incorporate the new facility as a bridge between the existing arena and gymnastics center, allowing shared use of the building. The combination of all the components under one roof economizes numerous resourcesfor both building systems and operations.
