Fan violence is endemic in Latin America, with Argentina usually hit the hardest. But in recent years, Brazil has been struggling the most with cases of violence inside and outside stadiums.
Just weeks into the newest season, another wave of fan violence is exposing the chronic failure of club officials and local authorities to eradicate the decades-long problem.
The headlines so far include:
- 16-year-old boy shot to death during a scuffle between rival fan groups after a match.
- Goalkeeper injured in his changing room by invading rival fans.
- Supporters ambushed inside a subway station.
Fan Violence Mars Ghana Advancing to African Cup Final
MALABO, Equatorial Guinea (AP) — With riot police protecting the players from incensed rival fans and using tear gas to disperse troublemakers in the crowd, Ghana advanced to the African Cup of Nations final with a 3-0 win over host Equatorial Guinea on Thursday.
The semifinal descended into chaos after the third goal, and Gabonese referee Eric Otogo-Castane soon halted the match in the 82nd minute. It resumed after about a 40-minute delay, and finished soon after.
"I've never played in front of anything like that, and I'd like to say sorry on behalf of my team," Equatorial Guinea captain Emilio Nsue said.

Soccer Stadium Stampede Kills 43
A stampede of fans inside and outside an overcrowded soccer stadium killed 43 people and injured scores of others.
Sobbing women were led away from the stadium early today after identifying their relatives' bodies. At least 27 bodies were lined up on the field, and several others lay outside.

Bad Behavior at Hockey Game Targeted Native Americans
An incident at the Rush hockey game Saturday in Rapid City sparked a flurry of protests directed at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and a group of fans in a rented suite.
According to Justin Poor Bear, a father who chaperoned 57 American Horse School students from Allen to the game, several men in a suite just above the students poured beer down on the Native American children and hurled racial slurs.
