Football Coach/A.D. Resigns after Exercise Complaints

A Texas high school athletic director and head football coach resigned after parents accused his staff of working their sons too hard as punishment for not keeping a clean locker room.

Kane Harris announced his resignation from his dual roles at Hamshire-Fannett Independent School District on Monday, the Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise reported

The parents of some freshmen and sophomore football players say football coaches punished their sons by making them do hundreds of jump squats for three consecutive days. Three of the players were admitted to the hospital last month. One player was diagnosed with acute kidney failure from a condition that arises from overworked muscles, the newspaper reported.

Harris, whose resignation was effective immediately, did not respond to requests for comment from the newspaper. He did wish Hamshire-Fannett student-athletes and the district well in his resignation letter.

School superintendent Pamela Lechler did not address the exercise allegations in a prepared statement but wished Harris well in his future endeavors.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is investigating the accusations and will provide its findings to the Texas Education Agency, according to the Enterprise and Beaumont TV station 12 News. The school district is conducting a separate investigation.
