A Texas high school football player died after he reportedly hit his facemask hard on the ground during a junior varsity game Thursday.

The fall, according to family members, created a blood clot near 15-year-old Aaron Singleton’s brain stem. He collapsed during the game, and suffered seizures afterwards.

Singleton was unresponsive upon arriving at the Cook Children’s Hospital. Surgeons were unable to reach the part of the brain where he suffered the injury, and the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office showed that Singleton died in the afternoon following the accident, according to KTVT reports.

A family friend said that even though he was legally dead because of no brain activity, Singleton’s body would remain on life support until his organs could be donated.

According to Cassondra Singleton, the boy’s mother, she had tried to get her son to quit football.

“Last Semester I told him you’re not playing football anymore. You’re done. But he said ‘Mom! Mom! Come on! Please!’ ” she said. “But just a couple of days before school was over I said ‘Okay, I’ll let you play.’ “

Singleton’s teammates honored his memory with a tribute during their next game.
