In the midst of a 57-game losing streak and an 0-10 season, the Houston Scarborough Spartans are getting into the Texas high school football playoffs.
At the beginning of the season, the school was placed in a district with only five competing teams; not long after the decision, one of the five schools lost their entire athletic program.
And since four teams make the playoffs, Scarborough had locked in a playoff berth before the season's first kick offāthough plenty of Texas' 1300 teams with winning records aren't moving on.
The coach, Ajani Sanders, isn't ashamed, however, according the Associated Press.
"They've asked me ... 'Coach, you just got beat 66-6. Why are you so excited?'" Sanders said. "All I want in life is an opportunity. Hey, this week is opportunity No. 11."
This is the first time in the state's history that a winless team has made the playoffs. And since the district realignment process runs in two year cycles, Scarborough could very well be the second time, too.
