The track at Plainville (Conn.) High School will need to be replaced after less than a year of use. The track, which was installed in early spring, has been deemed unsalvageable after a bubbling problem in the track’s synthetic turf material.
According to the Bristol Press, the bubbling was thought to have been caused by a drainage problem in the pavement underneath the track. However, testing revealed that that was not the case.
“There were no drainage issues,” school superintendent Maureen Brummett said on Tuesday night. “The track is not salvageable and must be completely replaced. The next level of work will be to see if the material was applied incorrectly,” she continued.
The town hopes that no taxpayer funds will be required to repair the track, and suggested that the issue may go to court if the contractor refuses to replace the track and install it correctly.
The track is expected to take months of work to replace, and that could interfere with student-athlete’s ability to use the track next year.
