Competitive Balance will make its debut on Thursday when the Ohio High School Athletic Association releases the divisional breakdown for fall sports. This was the landmark decision that wans passed by association members in 2014. Its implementation was delayed to coincide with the two-year cycle of determining student enrollment and to complete software.
There is a litany of contributing factors that affect Competitive Balance. At its most basic, athletes on rosters are assigned a numerical value. That total increases if the student resides outside a designated school district or did not begin their ninth-grade year in their current school district.
The basis of Competitive Balance was to offset the perceived athletic advantage private schools have on public schools. A disproportionate amount of state championships won by private schools was cited. Winter sports divisional breakdowns will be released in June and next spring's divisional breakdowns in August.
Also, the OHSAA Board of Directors has pushed back by one day the start of preseason football practice to Monday, July 31. All other fall sports will begin practice the next day.
The extra day of football practice makes a better fit for the required five acclimation days prior to full-contact drills.
"Most of our schools want three scrimmages and giving them this extra day of practice will help make that a reality," OHSAA assistant commissioner Beau Rugg said in a statement.
* Bill Derringer confirmed his resignation as head football coach at Tri-County North. He will remain district's superintendent and has been succeeded by former assistant Eric Wright.
Derringer had an unusual three-term, 13-season career as the Panthers' head coach, spanning the 1992-94, 2003-06 and 2010-16 seasons. Six of those teams advanced to the playoffs.
* The 20th Wayne Warrior Relays will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The 16-team field is mostly area boys and girls teams, including traditional boys powers Wayne, Dunbar and Trotwood-Madison.
Wayne is coming off a successful run in the Tri-Cities Classic at Johnson City, Tenn. The Wayne boys won by 91 points and the girls were second.
* Ansonia freshman Brock Shellhaas matched his career best of 15 feet in the pole vault at Franklin Monroe on Saturday.
* Xenia will host a recruiting seminar at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sponsored by Dynamite Sports, it's for athletes grades 7-12 and parents, and will share tips on how best to draw recruitment interest. The event is free and open to the public.
