A high school basketball coach in Georgia is under investigation after not reporting a player in possession of marijuana and then flushing the contraband down the toilet.
Westover High School boys basketball coach Dallis Smith was suspended for five days without pay in January for an incident that occurred at a tournament in Statesboro, Ga., in late December. Marijuana was discovered in the room of one of Westover’s players during a room check conducted by Smith and an assistant coach, the Albany (Ga.) Herald reported. Smith then reportedly flushed the marijuana down the toilet. Westover principal William Chunn received a letter of reprimand from the Dougherty County School System (DCSS) for not reporting the incident until he was questioned about it in early January, the newspaper reported.
The DCSS has since reported the incident to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PCS), which voted to conduct an investigation last week to find any ethical violations Smith may have made that could result in sanctions, TV station WALB News 10 reported this week.
The PCS could issue Smith a warning or a reprimand, they could suspend Smith’s teaching certificate or they could revoke the certificate, Kelly Henson, executive secretary of the PCS, told the TV station.
