ISI Executive Director Peter Martell to Retire

LANO, Texas ( January 13,2016) – Ice Skating Institute (ISI) President Rob McBride announced today that Peter Martell, former president of the Ice Capades Chalets, will retire as ISI executive director, effective Aug. 26, culminating a 19-year career with the association.

“The imprint he leaves on our industry goes far beyond his leadership roles with ISI,” McBride said. “He has spent a lifetime improving and professionalizing ice facilities.”

After graduating from Ohio University, Martell managed the original Sky Rink in New York City, N.Y. He later worked at the Ice Capades Chalets — the largest commercial ice arena management company at the time — where he advanced in his profession, eventually serving as president of the organization.

Following his 17-year career with “Capades,” Martell founded Sports Management Services, an ice arena management and consulting firm. He also served on the ISI Board of Directors for 17 years as commercial rinks representative and vice president. In December 1997, he was named ISI’s executive director.

“His tenure as ISI’s executive director is marked by milestones that have transformed the very nature of the organization,” McBride said. “Peter created the weSKATE instructor training program, pioneered the Ice Arena Institute of Management (iAIM) training and certification program, developed an ISI affiliate organization in Asia and established the first ISI-owned headquarters (in Plano, Texas).

Founded in 1959, the Ice Skating Institute is the first and only independent national trade association representing all aspects of the ice skating industry. The ISI weSKATE program is America’s original learn-to-skate program. Many Olympic and professional skaters got their start with ISI.
