Perfect Descent Becomes the Official Auto Belay of Global Speed Competitions

Littleton, CO -  The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) recently announced changes to the Speed License Rules requiring the use of automatic belay systems in all Speed World Record events.  This forward-thinking move by the global federation confirms its commitment to the climbing industry’s growth and highlights the advances in climbing technology for the specific climbing discipline of speed climbing.
A public bid was issued by the IFSC in early June seeking manufacturers that could provide the IFSC with an auto belay system capable of meeting the demands of high level Speed events. After careful review, that included athletes as well as event organizers, the IFSC awarded C-3 Manufacturing, maker of Perfect Descent Climbing Systems, exclusive license to supply auto belays for World Record Speed events.

Perfect Descent auto belays were in use for the 2016 IFSC World Cup Speed climbing finals in Chamonix, France this July. A fan of Speed climbing competitions only had to take one look at the climbing wall to see something was noticeably missing. The ropes had fallen and in their place was the distinctive yellow, flat webbing lanyard of the Perfect Descent model 220 auto belay.

Competitive Speed Climbing has seen some controversy over the years with teams challenging results based on the premise that a belay team inadvertently or otherwise has aided a climber. Top climbers can ascend the 15 meter speed wall in less than six seconds and the difference between winning and losing can be a fraction of a second. The introduction of Perfect Descent auto belays equalizes the playing field and eliminates the uncertainty and potential for error that comes with traditional belay teams.

The trait that sets Perfect Descent auto belays apart is its lanyard retraction speed. The engineering of the Perfect Descent allows the lanyard to respond to the quickest climbers’ ascents without producing any visible slack. The impact of the Perfect Descent on speed climbing competitions is striking. No more will athletes have to rely on speed belay teams with piles of rope, and competition spaces will no longer have to give up valuable audience space for these belayers.

You can see Perfect Descent auto belays in action at climbing centers around the world and when the top Speed climbers go head-to-head at the IFSC World Championships in Paris, this September 14-18. Find out more about the championships at www.ifsc-climbing.org or follow the IFSC on FacebookTwitter, and YouTube. Visit www.perfectdescent.com or check out the PD Facebook and Instagram to watch the world’s best speed climbers go head-to-head on the only auto belay that climbs as fast as they do.
