Rockreation, perhaps the first rock-climbing center in Salt Lake County, has closed its doors due to competition.

The facility at 2074 E. 3900 South closed Monday.

"After a lot of soul searching, I have come to the hard reality that the Rockreation Salt Lake City gym is no longer able to compete in today's state-of-the-art indoor climbing world," owner Jeff Clapp wrote on the company's website. "Instead of facing a slow slide into disappointment for members and staff, I have decided to operate for one last winter training season and to close the gym after a final day of operation on March 31."

The gym, which featured 7,500 square feet of climbing areas, opened 21 years ago.
