Jay Creps, who led Chatsworth's softball team to the L.A. City Section Division 1 championship game this season, was fired last week by Principal Tim Guy after a parent turned in a photo of him drinking beer out of a bottle during a team bonding party at his home that was attended by parents and players in either 2012 or 2013.

Creps, who just completed his fifth year as coach, was confronted with the photo from the party and was told by Guy that it was against district policy to have any alcohol at any team function. Creps reportedly was given the option of resigning or being fired and refused to quit.

The Los Angeles Unified School District confirmed Creps has been relieved of his coaching duties but declined to comment further, stating personnel matters are confidential.

Kaitlyn Ryder, a softball player who graduated from Chatsworth this year, started an on-line petition drive to challenge the decision. Ryder said she attended Chatsworth because of Creps, 60, and the way he treats his players. As of Wednesday evening, the petition had been signed by more than 380 people, including fellow coaches and Olympic gold medalist softball player Crystl Bustos.
