A former Highlands School District student has agreed to settle his concussion lawsuit against the district for $20,000, according to a notice filed by his attorney Monday in federal court.

Zachary Alt of Fawn sued the district, high school principal Thomas Shirey, assistant principal Walt Hanzlik and athletic trainer Mike Rizzo for allowing him to suffer repeated head injuries while playing football for the high school in 2007.

The district on Thursday filed an offer to settle that, if Alt had refused it, would have limited his ability to recover attorney fees if the final damages in the case had been less than $20,000. Scott Simon, Alt's attorney, filed a notice Monday that Alt was accepting the offer and that he would submit his petition for attorney fees within 14 days.
