Hamilton High School student athletes will be expected to adhere to "The Charger Way" beginning in the spring, a new program created by the school's athletics department to promote shared values at the school.

The Charger Way was created in fall 2013 by a group of Hamilton High School coaches who wanted to institute a character education program, according to information provided by the school. Staff members met with student representatives from the athletics program in October and November to determine what positive character traits student athletes should exhibit.

The group determined that developing character should be the defining goal of the program.

"Every single issue we deal with today is a character issue," according to a program guide. "We live in a day when 'image' is more important than character and 'style' counts more than substance."

The document states that student athletes can develop character by showing respect, excellence, integrity and responsibility.

Respect, defined as "to hold in esteem or honor," is exemplified by referring to teachers and coaches by formal titles, taking care of property, punctuality, and standing silently during the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Integrity, defined as "adherence to moral and ethical principles," is exemplified by telling the truth, leading by example, refusing to cheat, and refusing to compromise on matters of principle.

Responsibility, defined as "taking care of your duties, answering for your actions and being accountable," is exemplified by making responsible decisions, attending practice and workouts, maintaining a balance between sports, academics and work, and holding teammates accountable.

Excellence, defined as "greatness," is exemplified by great effort and attitude, sportsmanship, honesty, pride, and academic and athletic success.

Student athletes will be expected to sign a pledge this spring stating that they will exemplify these values.
