Good Sports Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary with Major Milestone
Source: Good Sports

Quincy, MA, May 22, 2013 – In the past decade, more than 500,000 kids have hit the country’s fields and courts with donated uniforms, shoes, balls and other equipment, thanks to Good Sports, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit dedicated to partnering with manufacturers to provide youth with sporting goods. Now, the organization is celebrating the donation of $8.8 million in sports and fitness equipment over 10 years, as well as more than a half-million kids outfitted for physical activity.

An inaugural donation of 500 basketballs from Spalding, donated to local Boston-area sports organizations, kicked the program off in 2003. Since then, Good Sports has expanded from Massachusetts to 41 states across the country, serving youth in 22 diverse sports – from volleyball to boating, soccer to gymnastics. To date, the nonprofit has helped more than 1,000 youth sports teams, leagues and clubs, channeling donated sports equipment from top-of-the-line manufacturers to organizations in need. As a result, 69 percent of recipient organizations reported serving more youth, while 68 percent dropped participation costs for families; 64 percent started new athletic programs.

Melissa Harper and Christy Keswick, the organization’s executive duo and members of the founding team behind Good Sports, believe all kids deserve the chance to play, and receive the vast health and social benefits of regular activity, regardless of where they live and family income. Looking ahead, Harper and Keswick hope to build on the nonprofit’s impressive first decade of growth, as they believe at least five million more kids need help getting on the field.

“Physical activity is critical for child development, not only physically but academically and emotionally,” Good Sports CEO Melissa Harper said. “Kids from advantaged backgrounds should not be the only ones to benefit from sports and fitness.  All kids should have the opportunity to play, and we are committed to making that a reality.”

Good Sports’ success stems from its mutually-beneficial partnership model, which since inception has included 114 relationships with sporting goods manufacturers and corporations. Partners benefit from channeling donation requests through Good Sports, generating a strong return on investment, in addition to the positive marketing and public relations benefits. Equipment partners, like New Balance, Easton-Bell Sports, Reebok and Wilson, further benefit through significant operational efficiencies gained through a donation partnership with the organization, as it allows them to easily shed surplus products.

Good Sports also collaborates with numerous corporate partners, including several Fortune 500 companies. Professional athletes and teams also partner to deliver donations and serve as role models; pro partners include Will Middlebrooks of the Boston Red Sox, Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots, Carl Landry of the Golden State Warriors and Corey Wooten of the Chicago Bears, as well as pro sports teams, including the Boston Celtics, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia Eagles.

Good Sports’ model works because all parties recognize the pressing need to support American sports and fitness programs. Children benefit from constructive outlets and physical activity, and today’s kids are in dire need of healthy opportunities. One in three American children are overweight or obese, a number that has more than tripled since 1980, even as fitness and athletic opportunities decline, particularly in urban areas. The 2008 U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends at least one hour of daily activity for youth, but research shows only 42 percent of children between 6 and 11, and only 8 percent of teens, accomplish this. In fact, more than 50 percent of kids stop playing sports by 12 years old. Good Sports serves youth up to 18 years old in diverse communities – from 16,000 kids at a popular Boston community center to small teams in Iowa farmland – in a cohesive, passionate effort to counteract these negative and unhealthy trends.

About Good Sports

Good Sports helps lay the foundation for healthy, active lifestyles by providing athletic equipment, footwear and apparel to disadvantaged young people nationwide. By partnering with sporting goods manufacturers, Good Sports gets crucial equipment to kids who need it most, getting them in the game. Since 2003, Good Sports has provided more than $8 million worth of equipment to 1,000 youth programs, impacting more than 500,000 kids.

STMA Announces Sponsorship Support for First Ever U.S. National Arboretum Peer-Reviewed Exhibit
Source: Sports Turf Managers Association

LAWRENCE, Kan. (May 17, 2013) – The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) today announced its sponsorship and planning support of the United States National Arboretum’s (USNA) “Grass Roots” Initiative, the first peer-reviewed exhibit of its kind hosted by the governmental research center.  The exhibit will feature an educational section entitled “Game Winning Grass” that will examine turf in sports fields and its importance to athletes and athletic performance, among other related topics.

The exhibit will be peer-reviewed by Division C-5 (Turfgrass Science) of the Crop Science Society of America and is expected to run four years on USNA grounds with construction anticipated to begin Fall 2013.  Efforts will encompass a variety of informational outreach programs to eventually include “…an onsite exhibit, symposia, workshops, and demonstrations, all aimed at expanding knowledge at a range of levels – from school children to policymakers – about the importance of turf and turf research on the landscape and the environment”, according to material provided by USNA Director Colien Hefferan.

“STMA’s participation in the Grass Roots Initiative is especially important, as it will take a science-based approach to grass research in general and, specifically, its examination of the turfgrass industry,” said STMA President Michael Goatley, Jr., Ph.D. “Our hope is that this informational exhibit will demonstrate to a wider audience – who perhaps might not be as familiar with our industry – all the benefits of turfgrass, including carbon sequestration and soil stabilization.”

Sports fields and lawn games will be one of 14 topics featured at the exhibit, which will feature three main focal points related to lawns and field grass – people, plants, and environment – and will include information on lawn care equipment, rain gardens, fertilizer, green roofs, danthonia, agricultural grasses, golf, grass structure, and cool-season/warm-season grasses, among others.

Fundraising efforts are currently underway to meet the USNA’s $400,000 goal. Those interested in donating to the turfgrass exhibit - both individuals and companies alike, of all sizes – are encouraged to contact U.S. National Arboretum Director Dr. Colien Hefferan directly at Colien.Hefferan@ars.usda.gov or 202-245-4539.

The U.S. National Arboretum, according to department materials, “…encompasses more than 440 acres of land in northeast Washington and also has worksites in Beltsville, Md., and McMinnville, Tenn., and is one of the world's premier woody plant research facilities and public gardens. The arboretum was established by Congress in 1927 to serve the public need for scientific research, education and gardens that conserve and showcase plants that enhance the environment. More than 475,000 people each year visit the arboretum's plant collections and participate in events and education programs.”

Sporturf Expands into the Midwestern U.S.
Source: Sporturf

Dalton, Ga. (May 21, 2013) – Sporturf, an international manufacturer and builder of synthetic turf fields, has significantly expanded its presence in the Midwest with the opening of the company’s third regional field office in Kansas City, Missouri.  Sporturf Midwest is under the leadership of President Craig Shonk, and will focus on Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.

“This strategic move opens up a market that Sporturf has not really been in before,” noted Shonk. “Bringing an ISO manufacturer and a Midwest-based ASBA certified field builder together gives clients the best of both worlds.”

Sporturf Midwest recently completed their first, full-size turf install in Nebraska with the practice field at Millard North High School in Omaha, the largest high school in the state. Millard North benefitted in many ways from the new field, including having access to the most current fiber technology. Their team, the Mustangs, will play soccer and football games on Powerhouse 3C featuring a custom blend of monofilament and tape fibers that are the wave of the future.

Peru State’s historic Oak Bowl is the next project to take advantage of Sporturf’s local “grassroots” plan of allowing direct access with their synthetic turf manufacturer. “Building long lasting relationships gives everyone involved unprecedented peace of mind,” added Darby McCamy, Sporturf Fields Vice President. “We have bridged the gap between owner and manufacturer with our local team of certified field builders, who focus on the design-build process more than the next sale.”

The Sporturf main office and mill is located in Dalton, Georgia, and San Diego-based Sporturf International started in 2003.  In addition, Sporturf International serves some of the most prominent sports facilities in South America and the Caribbean, such as the Haiti FIFA National Stadium and Eddy Coello Stadium in Ecuador.

About Sporturf
Headquartered in Dalton, Georgia, Sporturf supplies large and small customers alike with the widest variety of turf in the world. The company is a division of Controlled Products, one of the leading manufacturers of synthetic turf worldwide. Sporturf has engineered synthetic turf fields for baseball, soccer, football, lacrosse and hockey programs in 30 states and the D.C. area. Keep Youth Sports Safety Top of Mind: Guidelines from NATA
Source: National Athletic Trainers' Association

DALLAS, May 15, 2013 – With the spring sports season well under way and summer preseason practices and youth league games around the corner, young athletes are already enjoying warm weather activities and competition. “Every team and athlete should have sports safety as a top priority,” says Larry Cooper, chair of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Secondary School Committee and head athletic trainer at Penn Trafford (Pa.) High School. “It’s vital for coaches, athletic trainers, parents and the athletes themselves to maintain good communication and follow guidelines to ensure all participants are fit for play.”

NATA hosted the 4th Youth Sports Safety Summit earlier this year with the support of the Youth Sports Safety Alliance, now composed of 109 organizations committed to keeping athletes safe, and launched the first-ever National Action Plan for Sports Safety and Student Athlete Bill of Rights (www.youthsportssafetyalliance.org). “Each athlete is entitled to appropriate care, prevention and treatment of injuries should they occur,” says Cooper.

NATA offers several sports safety tips to keep athletes in the game:

1.       Make sure the athlete is physically and mentally in the game: Parents, with assistance from coaches, should determine whether their children are physically and psychologically conditioned for the sport/activity level they’re playing. Do not push children into something they do not want to do. Additionally, if an athlete has been injured and is returning to sport, it’s critical for him or her to have the right mind set and confidence to return to play and avoid repeat injury.

2.       Get a pre-participation exam: All athletes should have a pre-participation exam to determine their readiness to play and uncover any condition that may limit participation.

3.       Follow a team approach to care: In the case of injury, find out who will provide care and ask to review their credentials. Many schools and sports teams rely on athletic trainers or parents with medical and first aid training and certification to keep kids safe. Yet less than half of high schools have access to athletic trainers.

4.       Beat the heat: Acclimatize athletes to warm weather activities over a 14-day period. The goal is to increase exercise heat tolerance and enhance the ability to exercise safely and effectively in warm and hot conditions. Should heat illness occur, cool first and transport second: immediate cold water immersion is critical to reducing the athlete’s temperature rapidly. Determine core body temperature to best assess the athlete’s condition.

5.       Use your head: Athletes should be encouraged to speak up if they are suffering any related symptoms (dizziness, loss of memory, fatigue). Concussions must be carefully managed using follow up assessments of symptoms, neurocognitive function and balance, prior to initiating a gradual return to play. Should a more serious brain injury occur, the medical staff should be prepared to transport the athlete to a facility, while ensuring adequate ventilation and elevating the head to decrease intracranial pressure.

6.       Maintain Heart health: Recognition is vital to treatment: sudden cardiac arrest should be suspected in any athlete who has collapsed and is unresponsive. Public access to early defibrillation is essential: a goal of less than 3-5 minutes from the time of collapse to delivery of the first shock from an automated external defibrillator (AED) is strongly recommended. Most schools now have AEDS. Ensure that the medical expert and other personnel know where they are located, how to use them and that they are placed on sidelines during competitions and games.

7.       Share an athlete’s medical history:
Parents should complete an emergency medical authorization form, providing parent contact information and permission for emergency medical care for the student athlete. Check with your school/league to obtain the form.

8.       Ensure equipment is in working order:
Make sure all equipment ranging from field goals, basketball flooring, gymnastics apparatus and field turf are in safe and working order. This also includes emergency medical equipment such as spine boards, splint devices, AEDs (which should be checked once per month; batteries and pads need consistent monitoring and replacing). All it takes is a slip on a wet surface or twist of an ankle on an ungroomed field to lead to lower extremity injuries, among others.

9.       Ascertain coaches’ qualifications:
A background check should always be performed on coaches and volunteers:

-       Coaches should have background and knowledge in the sport they are coaching. They should be credentialed if that is a requirement in the state, conference or league.

-       Coaches should have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), AED and first aid training.

-       Coaches should strictly enforce the sports rules and have a plan for dealing with emergencies.
-       Ensure appropriate credentials for coaching from the respective sport governing body.
-       Coaches can also take an online course by visiting: http://www.nata.org/Sports-safety-for-youth-coaches-course

10.   Check that locker rooms, gyms and shower surfaces are clean: With the advent of MRSA and related bacterial, viral and fungal skin infections reported in recent years, it is critical to keep these surfaces routinely cleaned and checked for germs. Athletes must be discouraged from sharing towels, athletic gear, water bottles, disposable razors and hair clippers. All clothing and equipment, including bags, should be laundered and/or disinfected on a daily basis.

11.  Be smart about sickle cell trait: All newborns are tested at birth for this particular inherited condition and those results should be shared during a pre-participation exam. Red blood cells can sickle during intense exertion, blocking blood vessels and posing a grave risk for athletes with the sickle cell trait. Screening and simple precautions may prevent deaths and help the athlete with sickle cell trait thrive in his or her chosen sport. Know the signs and symptoms (fatigue or shortness of breath) to differentiate this condition from other causes of collapse.

12.  Ensure an emergency action plan is in place:
Every team should have a written emergency action plan, reviewed by the athletic trainer or local Emergency Medical Service. Individual assignments and emergency equipment and supplies need to be included in the emergency action plan. If an athletic trainer is not employed by the school or sport league, qualified individuals need to be present to render care. Knowing that a school has prepared for emergency will give parents peace of mind.

13.   Adopt a “Time Out” system: Each health care team should take a “Time Out” before athletic events to ensure emergency action plans are reviewed and in place. Determine the role of each person; communication coordination; presence of ambulance; designated hospital; test of all emergency equipment; issues that could impact the plan such as weather or other considerations.

14.   Build in recovery time: Allow time for the body to rest and rejuvenate in between practices, games and even seasons. “Recovery time is essential,” says Cooper. “Without rest and a change of motion and activity, we put young athletes at risk of repetitive or chronic injury.”

15.   Breathe easier:
Athletes with asthma should be properly educated about their condition, appropriate medications, use of inhaler equipment and how to recognize “good or bad” breathing days to prevent exacerbations. A warm up protocol may decrease the risk of asthma or reliance on medications.

16.   Stay smart about steroids: Use of anabolic-androgenic steroids can lead to a host of negative effects on the health and well-being of athletes and non-athletes alike. Be aware of signs and symptoms of misuse including: rapid body mass or increase in performance; extreme muscular growth; abnormal or excessive acne, unexplained hypertension, moodiness, aggression, depression or obsession with exercise and diet. Report this immediately to the athletic trainer or other school medical professionals.

“It’s critical that all members of a school’s athletic health care team, parents, teachers and others involved in the care of the athlete have ongoing communication to ensure a safe sports setting,” says Cooper. “With those protocols in place, athletes can enjoy the great spirit, competition, and accomplishment that come from safe and fair play.”

“And, if your school is following the right protocols, enter it in the NATA Safe School award program that recognizes schools implementing appropriate steps to keep athletes safe. It is a win-win for students, the athletic health care team and school at large.”

Paul Byrne Announces Retirement as Precor President; Rob Barker Named as Successor
Source: Precor

Woodinville, WA – May 13, 2013 – President Paul Byrne announced today that after 28 years with Precor, including 13 as President, he will begin his retirement on September 1.  Precor Vice President – EMEA & APAC, Rob Barker, will assume the presidency in the culmination of a long-developing succession plan.

When announcing his retirement Byrne shared:

“Over the past 35 years, I have been fortunate to have been part of an industry that has contributed to the well being of so many people, and to have spent 28 of those years at Precor has been beyond fortunate.  It has been an immeasurable gift.  I will retire with great pride in what we have accomplished and with eager anticipation of what lies ahead.”

Byrne, one of the most recognized and respected executives in the fitness industry, began his career as the co-founder of Concept 90, a chain of stores that helped introduce the concept of specialty fitness retail in the United States.  In 1985, Precor founder David Smith invited Byrne to join the then fledgling company as Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  In 2000, Byrne took the helm as president.  Over the course of 28 years Byrne has been a consistent visionary, guiding the transformation of Precor, the fitness industry and the way millions of people exercise.  Under his leadership, Precor:

·      Grew from a $20 million manufacturer of home rowing machines in the United States to a $350 million supplier of home and commercial fitness experiences globally
·      Developed a corporate culture admired for openness and loyalty which is regularly recognized in media surveys of “Best Places to Work”
·      Introduced the Elliptical Fitness Cross-Trainer (EFX®) , establishing what is now the second largest category of cardio equipment found in homes and gyms
·      Introduced the Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT®), the most personalized piece of cardio training equipment available
·      Established the standard in the newly developing category of networked fitness with Preva®, which now operates in more than 1,000 commercial installations across 37 countries

Upon Byrne’s recommendation, Rob Barker was unanimously approved as the new President by the Amer Sports Board of Directors and Heikki Takala, President & CEO of Amer Sports.  The promotion of Barker continues the legacy of internal leadership development at Precor.  The expectation of a smooth transition and continued success of Precor was emphasized by Byrne:

“Rob has been part of the Precor family since 1995, and I consider him a great colleague and a great friend.  He has done an extraordinary job leading our international business and helping to shape our overall strategy as part of the global senior management team. I am confident in the future of the Precor business and the Precor culture with Rob as our new President.”

Barker joined Precor in 1995 as the U.K. Sales and Marketing Manager and has developed his experience through several positions.  For the last five years Barker served as Vice President – EMEA & APAC and as a member of the global Precor senior management team where he has helped shape the company’s growth strategy.  During his five year tenure at the helm of EMEA & APAC, the Precor business has grown dramatically.  From 2008 through 2012, sales increased 133 percent and now represent 45 percent of all Precor revenue.  Barker will begin his transition now, enjoying several months of overlap with Byrne.  He and his family will relocate to the United States this summer.  In response to the announcement Barker remarked:

“I am honoured and excited to be asked by Paul Byrne and Heikki Takala to become the Precor President upon Paul’s retirement.  I congratulate Paul on his strong career and admire his extraordinary efforts in shaping Precor into the world-leading company that it is today. It has been my good fortune to work closely with Paul for many years and to see first-hand how Precor has, under his stewardship, innovated entirely new categories of fitness equipment and services like the EFX, AMT and Preva. It will be a pleasure to work with our employees worldwide to continue the Precor legacy of innovation.”

Precor operates as the fitness segment of Amer Sports, where the traditional Precor expertise in exercise is complemented by the other brands’ deep understanding of sports and advanced sports equipment.  Heikki Takala, President and CEO of Amer Sports, added:

“I would like to thank Paul for his great contribution to the company as President of Precor.  Paul leaves a huge legacy, with very strong business momentum coupled with a tremendous strategic business transformation from ‘traditional’ fitness company into a ‘networked’ business behind the successful introduction of Preva.  As to Rob Barker’s appointment, I’m really glad that we have been able to internally grow a professional like Rob to assume Paul’s role. Rob’s many years of experience with Precor has given him the skills to succeed in the new position.”

FIBO Announces Winners of 2013 Innovation Awards
Source: FIBO

12 April 2013 -- Eight nominees in three categories were in the running for the FIBO INNOVATION AWARD 2013 on Friday afternoon. Now the winners have been announced. The nominees were products that represent an innovative development for the entire fitness industry. The prize was awarded in the Communication and Design, Health Promotion and Training Equipment categories.

Training Equipment Category
The issue of safety in training with heavy weights is an essential criterion for evaluation in the Training Equipment category. With its C.O.D. Machine, BILT by Agassi & Reyes met this requirement to an outstanding degree. Due to the ergonomic arrangement of the moving parts of the machine, users can experience an intensive yet safe training both in a sitting and in a standing position. It guarantees both a natural body posture and the safe and precise performance of the exercises at all times, which reduces the strain on the muscles of the back and neck. Thanks to the special IntelliLift™ resistance system, the training effect can be further enhanced. As a result, deep muscles are exercised at the same time – a unique effect not offered by other weightlifting machines.

In the reasoning of the jury, spokesman Dr. Jörg Schlösser, Managing Director of the TÜV Rheinland LGA Products GmbH, particularly emphasised the dynamic mobility, motion management and the high degree of freedom allowed by the machine in performing the exercises. Thanks to this combination, the machine enables movements very closely resembling those performed in a large number of sports disciplines, he said.

Health Category

In the Health category, LMT Deutschland AG was the winner with The Postural Line. In this product, LMT focussed on sensorimotor function, something not existent in this form before, jury member Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse said. The “Postural Line” by LMT is a system for measuring and exercising body posture. Thanks to its technically sophisticated, state-of-the-art central unit and software, an individual training programme to correct body posture can be automatically created for clients. As a result, the product has the potential to become a natural part of the postacute phase of a rehab programme and an established feature in the fitness sector, e.g. in classic cardio and isotonic programmes. The decisive aspect for the jury was the fact that in terms of sensorimotor function the product stands for maximum individuality by interlinking the test and training segments. Its combination of motor function, documentation, evaluation and maximum training planning is particularly innovative.

Communication & Design Category
Fitness trails are back in the German countryside. In the Communication & Design category, Ralph Scholz, designated Event Director and successor to Olaf Tomscheit, announced the winner. With its Whole body circuit: Outdoor fitness equipment with resistance pads, Stilum fitness succeeded against the Climbstation by Climbstation VOF. The equipment was designed in cooperation with sports physicians and caters for a variety of “performance levels” thanks to a rubber pad functioning as the diametrical resistance. As a result, it motivates people to exercise and allow short yet highly effective training internals. Furthermore, their use is self-explanatory and intensifies the training effect thanks to the special construction. This makes for a high degree of user-friendliness.

The individual stations can be freely combined and fit in perfectly with their surroundings. Individual combinations are also possible. Thanks to its low-key design, the Whole-body circuit is does not dominate the surrounding scenery. All in all, the innovation impressed the jury with its harmonious design and transparent and delicate appearance.

About the FIBO INNOVATION AWARD
The FIBO INNOVATION AWARD was presented at FIBO 2013 for the fourteenth time. The prize was offered by FIBO in cooperation with an independent jury of experts under the direction of the TÜV Rhineland Group and the FIT FOR FUN magazine. Members of the jury were sports scientists, sports physicians and journalists, among them Prof. Dr. Ingo Froböse (Director of the Institute for Kinetic Therapy at DSHS), Matthias Lompa (MA in sports science), Heike Schönegge (journalist and author from Hamburg), Elmar Trunz-Carlisi (sports scientist) and Jörg Schlösser (Managing Director of TÜV Rheinland LGA Products GmbH).

National Lacrosse Participation Tops 720,000
Source: US Lacrosse

BALTIMORE, April 15, 2013 — A record total of 722,205 players competed on organized lacrosse teams in 2012, as reported in the annual US Lacrosse Participation Report released today. The growth rate from last year (683,730) was 5.5 percent, marking the ninth straight year of at least 5 percent growth.

More than half of the participants (389,275) compete at the youth level, representing a 7.8 percent growth rate from last year. Roughly 65 percent of the youth players are boys, but both genders have seen significant increases in participation in recent years. Over the last five years at the youth level, the number of boys playing has increased 62 percent and the number of girls playing has increased 61 percent.

Lacrosse continues to be the fastest-growing sport at the high school level, and a total of 282,148 players competed in 2012. According to data from the NFHS, from 2007 to 2012, a total of 750 schools added boys’ teams and 638 schools added girls’ teams. Those figures represent a 47 percent increase in the number of boys’ programs and a 43 percent increase in the number of girls’ programs, easily outdistancing bowling, which is the second-fastest growing sport with an 18 percent growth rate for boys and a 22 percent growth rate for girls.

Lacrosse is also the fastest-growing NCAA sport, and nearly 35,000 players competed on varsity, club or junior college teams in 2012. Thirty new varsity programs were added in 2012, including the University of Michigan’s men’s team, the first school with a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) football program to add men’s lacrosse since 1981.

US Lacrosse has produced the Participation Report annually since 2001, and over that time span the number of players has grown 184 percent, from 253,901 to 722,205. This survey counts only play on organized teams, and does not count leisure-time play of the sport.

The primary source of data for this report is provided by the 64 US Lacrosse regional chapters. Each chapter reports detailed participation at the youth level, and significant data is also obtained from US Lacrosse membership records, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the National Federation of State High School Associations and www.laxpower.com.

U of Iowa Wins First College Interactive Cycling Challenge
Source: Interactive Fitness

Sunnyvale, California - April 15, 2013 - The University of Iowa, home of the Hawkeyes, captured the 2013 College Interactive Cycling Challenge, sponsored by Interactive Fitness, makers of the popular Expresso Bike.

According to Matthew Stancel at the University of Iowa, "I'm the Assistant Director of Fitness Programs at the University of Iowa Recreational Services Department. We currently have six Expresso Bikes at this facility (the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center). It opened a little over two years ago. I'm fairly new here; I started about a year and a half ago. We started out with three Expresso Bikes, but our member comment cards kept coming in asking us to add more, so we are now up to six.

"I've seen a huge increase in the use of the Expresso Bikes over the last few months," Stancel said. "We promote them via our social networks like Facebook and Twitter, bi-weekly newsletters emailed to our members, marketed on all digital televisions, general fitness orientation and all the attendants on the floor are trained in how to use the product. Our membership is comprised of 30,865 students, 4108 faculty and staff, and around 485 community members.

"It's a totally different biking atmosphere from a traditional, stationary bike. On the Expresso Bike you can shift gears, select routes, change grades, and record your rides. All the features are why they are being used so much more. It's so technology-forward compared to the other bikes," said Stancel.  "You save so much data, race history and more. I'm on the leader board right now for our school. Personally, I like that you can see the top riders time by track, I'm very competitive. Other bikes it's all word of mouth in regards to how far they rode or what time they did. It's a motivator for me - I can see what others are doing and race against them in real time. It's all about the competition - I want our school to be the top in anything we do. The ability to see in real-time what other schools and other riders are doing is really great for us."

In addition to the success of the University of Iowa in the College Interactive Cycling Challenge, Stancel represented the Hawkeyes during the NIRSA Interactive Cycling Challenge in Las Vegas, winning the men's title.

In February, Interactive Fitness sponsored the first-ever College Interactive Cycling Challenge, with virtual competition nationwide on the Expresso Bike.  Thousands of riders from over 70 colleges and universities rode on Expresso Bikes and competed in the College Interactive Cycling Challenge.  The University of Iowa was the winner of the College Interactive Cycling Challenge Division I National Championship with 13,485 points (total miles plus bonus points) during the month of February.  Colorado Mountain College won the College Interactive Cycling Challenge Division II National Championship with 4,636 points (total miles per bike plus bonus points). Both winning schools were awarded with a brand-new Expresso Bike - a $7,000 value.

During the month of February, in the heat of the competition in the College Interactive Cycling Challenge, there were 1,275 riders on the Expresso Bike from Interactive Fitness.  Those riders rode over 164,367 miles, burned over 5,780,154 calories, and shared 3,122 rides over Twitter and Facebook.  The average rider rode approximately 128 miles, burned approximately 4,533 calories, and shared approximately two rides over Twitter and Facebook.

For the first three months of 2013, the University of Iowa riders on the Expresso Bike have amassed a total of 28,343 points, burned 1,685,923 calories, and ridden over 36,184 miles through March 31st.

As utilized at the University of Iowa and gaining fans at dozens of colleges across the nation, the Expresso Bike from Interactive Fitness is an exciting new way to engage students and members. Well beyond a stationary bike, the Expresso Bike from Interactive Fitness is the one product that does it all.  It enables riders to experience full virtual reality, as they ride through over 40 different "worlds," ranging from a one-mile speed course to a 20-mile mountain climb.

And it replaces "cardio isolation" by keeping the riders "social" -- every Expresso Bike is connected via the Internet, enabling riders to share their rides, and compete "virtually" with riders in other locations around the country, instantly.  The Expresso Bike features state-of-the-art electronics and features designed to stimulate the mind as well as the body, and enable riders in one location to virtually race against another rider or group of riders in another location.  These "Virtual Races" are stored and remembered, tracking progress automatically as the rider becomes stronger and healthier.

For additional information on the Expresso Bike from Interactive Fitness, visit the Interactive Fitness college website.

May 1 Is Project ACES Day
Source: American College of Sports Medicine

Jersey City, NJ - In conjunction with May as Exercise is Medicine®  Month, "The World's Largest Exercise Class" is coming to children and schools around the world May 1. Millions of children across the globe will be celebrating the 25th annual Project ACES® Day beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1.  In addition to Exercise is Medicine Month, Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) coincides with National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and National Physical Education Week.

According to Olympic Gold Medal Decathlete Dan O’Brien, “Project ACES engages millions of children, parents, and teachers each year to participate in physical activity at their schools and at home. Through Project ACES, children learn the value and importance of good nutrition, adequate physical fitness and healthy decision-making – lessons they can carry well into adulthood.”

Schools can choose their activity, from walking to jogging, from martial arts to dancing. Students typically exercise for 15 to 45 minutes following an educational component. In the past, schools have incorporated celebrity guest speakers or used music in their Project ACES activities. The program has been recognized by multiple presidents, including Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, and has inspired events in 50 different countries. As the time zones change, this chain of local events creates a global wave of exercise.

"Project ACES is a great way to teach children how to live a healthy lifestyle through adequate physical activity,” said physical education teacher Len Saunders, who created the program to motivate children to exercise in 1989. “Childhood obesity is an issue plaguing many young people today, and Project ACES is designed to make physical activity and nutrition fun.”

Schools and students will celebrate Project ACES day by making physical activity a priority. Federal physical activity guidelines recommend children and adolescents do 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Project ACES Day helps children reach this goal from activities ranging from running to sports and games. Teachers can also make physical activity a priority throughout the year by creating a Project ACES club at their school to teach and learn healthy lifestyle food and exercise choices.

“We're all in this together,” said Shihan H. J. Saunders, the President of the Youth Fitness Coalition and an exercise physiologist. "Something magical happens when we synchronize our collective consciousness in the spirit of FUN on Project ACES Day.”

Parents are invited to participate by joining their kids at school or by celebrating on May 4th for the sixth annual PACES Day: Parents and Children Exercise Simultaneously. PACES Day kicks off a 52-week exercise program with various fun activities parents can enjoy with their children. The PACES website offers resources including a list of family activity ideas for every week of the year.

“If we feel good about ourselves, we can lead by example, and inspire our kids to be their fit best, not just on Project ACES and PACES Day, but every day and toward each other,” said H. J. Saunders.

PACES Day and Project ACES are signature programs of the Youth Fitness Coalition, a New Jersey-based non-profit organization committed to combating childhood obesity by making exercise programs fun, medically safe and age-appropriate by educating and inspiring children, parents and teachers about the importance of lifelong fitness and making healthy lifestyle choices daily.

Information on Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and other resources is available online.

The American College of Sports Medicine is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. More than 50,000 international, national and regional members and certified professionals are dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

National Athletic Trainers' Association Introduces Safe Sports School Award
Source: National Athletic Trainers' Association

DALLAS, April 12, 2013 As follow up to the 4th Annual Youth Sports Safety Summit held earlier this year, the National Athletic Trainers' Association continues to champion young athletes by launching the first-ever Safe Sports School award program. Created to recognize secondary schools around the country that provide safe environments for student athletes, the initiative reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention and treatment.

This award not only highlights those schools that have put safety first, but will hopefully generate some competition among schools to be the first in their community to receive it, said NATA president Jim Thornton, MA, ATC, CES. We hope that 10 years from now the award will no longer be needed because Safety First will have become the norm.

Physical activity is very important for our youth, says Thornton, though physical education classes may not be as common in schools as they once were. At the same time, there has been an increase in competitive sports and not without risk. Brain injury/concussion, cardiac arrest, heat illness, exertional sickling, cervical spine fractures and other injuries and illnesses are potentially life-threatening. Proper planning with proper equipment and personnel is vital to the safety of student athletes today, he continued.

In order to achieve Safe Sport School status, athletic programs must do the following:

·        Create a positive athletic health care administrative system
·        Provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations
·        Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities
·        Plan for selection, fit function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment
·        Provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes
·        Develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions
·        Provide or facilitate injury intervention
·        Create and rehearse venue-specific Emergency Action Plan
·        Provide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling/education
·        Be sure athletes and parents are educated of the potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities

The application for a Safe Sports School award outlines the specific actions that will lead an athletics program to the highest safety standards for its players. A school may earn a 1st or 2nd Team award; 1st is awarded to schools that act on all of the recommended and required elements. 2nd Team is granted to schools that have completed only required elements.

Any secondary school can apply, says Thornton. Applications, which require a fee, must be signed by the schools principal or athletic director and an athletic trainer or team physician. Schools qualifying for either award will receive a banner and artwork to promote their achievement. For more information contact sad@nata.org

The global record attempt for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL), will take place at 3 pm GMT (11am ET, 8 am PT.)

The online programming, created by youth protection education leader Praesidium, will empower athletes with information about sexual abuse prevention, how to identify inappropriate behavior, and how to report concerns.

Athlete education will be available online starting April 9.

"Education is a fundamental part of USA Swimming’s Safe Sport program,” said Susan Woessner, Director of Safe Sport for USA Swimming. “As we continue to work to raise awareness about this important issue, the free athlete training will help empower our membership with education about safe sport."

The comprehensive online programming includes information about how offenders operate; how to recognize, respond, and report boundary violations; myths and facts about child sexual abuse, and USA Swimming's Athlete Protection Policies and Procedures.

The addition of the athlete training represents the third and final phase of USA Swimming's online education launch. The education for athletes is optional, but strongly encouraged.

In 2012, USA Swimming launched optional parent training for all parents of its 300,000 plus members. In 2011, the organization began mandatory online education for its 30,000 coaches, non-athlete members and volunteers. USA Swimming requires all non-athlete members to complete this training as a condition of membership.

”USA Swimming continues to demonstrate their leadership in youth sports and strong commitment to safety,” said Britt Darwin-Looney, Praesidium’s Director of Youth Development Services. “We are pleased with the partnership and effort to educate all of their membership in such a short period of time.”

USA Swimming has developed one of the most comprehensive safe sport programs in Olympic sport. Its abuse prevention initiative is rooted in six core areas: Policies & Guidelines, Screening & Selection, Training & Education, Monitoring & Supervision, Recognizing, Reporting & Responding, and Grassroots Engagement & Feedback.
