Hershey Company Kicks Off 34th Annual Track & Field Games In Nearly 4,000 Communities
Source: The Hershey Company

Olympic Greats Carl Lewis, Rafer Johnson Return as Ambassadors for one of North America’s longest-running youth fitness initiatives, which is free to participants

HERSHEY, Pa. - The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) announced today that it has officially opened registration for the 2011 Hershey®’s Track & Field Games, the company’s long-running, free youth fitness initiative that takes place in nearly 4,000 communities throughout North America.

Now entering its 34th year, Hershey’s Track & Field Games is the largest youth sports program of its kind in North America. It is designed to encourage physical fitness and sportsmanship for youth of all skill levels ages 9 to 14. Information on the nearest Hershey’s Track & Field Games local events, including how to register, is available at www.hersheystrackandfield.com.

More than 10 million youth athletes have participated in the Hershey’s Track & Field Games over the program’s previous 33 years – all at no cost of entry. And while several Olympic athletes received their start through the program, the mission of the Games is simply to provide kids with a fun and easy way to become active and engaged in healthy activities.

Olympic legends Carl Lewis, one of only two athletes ever to capture nine gold medals, and Rafer Johnson, winner of the decathlon gold medal at the 1960 Games in Rome, will once again serve as Hershey’s Track & Field Games ambassadors.

This year, Hershey is teaming up with the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program, a unique program that collects old, worn-out athletic shoes to be recycled into Nike Grind, a material used in creating athletic and playground surfaces, as well as select Nike products. Program participants will be invited to bring used athletic shoes to state and provincial meets, which will then be recycled into Nike Grind. A Hershey’s Track & Field Games playground will be awarded to a participating local community as part of the program’s work with Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program. Since its inception in the early 1990’s, Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program has recycled more than 25 million pairs of athletic shoes into Nike Grind.

“The Hershey Company is more committed than ever to promoting physical activity and sportsmanship among young people,” said Jim George, Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility, The Hershey Company, and Hershey's Track & Field Games Chairman of the Board. “Working with Nike’s innovative Reuse-A-Shoe program, which helps kids get more involved in environmental stewardship, is a wonderful new component that will help us on our mission to create fun fitness opportunities for kids throughout North America.”

In 2010, thousands of kids in nearly 4,000 North American communities participated in the Hershey’s Track & Field Games. Once again this year, the top boys and girls who advance through local, district (where applicable), and state/provincial Hershey’s Track & Field Games events will be eligible to qualify for their regional team and receive an all-expense-paid trip to compete in this summer’s 2011 North American Final Meet in Hershey, Pa., courtesy of The Hershey Company.

Hershey also announced the continuation of its Hershey’s FastTrack to Sports Starters Guide, which includes coach’s cards and skill activities, and is available for new local meet coordinators. Hershey’s FastTrack to Sports was developed in conjunction with Carl Lewis and Athletics Canada to instruct children in the basics of track and field, which serve as the fundamentals for all sports and many everyday activities. It was first launched in 2007 as a pilot program for the National Recreation and Park Association and is now available by registering a local meet within your community at www.hersheystrackandfield.com. The site also offers helpful information, materials and lesson plans that teach adults and children basic running, jumping and throwing skills.

For more information on the Hershey’s Track and Field Games and the North American Final meet, visit www.hersheystrackandfield.com.

NSPF to Host 20 Training Sessions In 2011 On VGB Compliance
Source: National Swimming Pool Foundation

Classes will educate health officials about how to meet and inspect
for compliance with the federal P&SS Act’s requirements.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) is hosting 19 free National Pool and Spa Training Sessions, one longer Safety Event (also free), plus periodic webinars in 2011 to educate health officials about the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (P&SS Act). Training will be held in locations throughout the United States. A schedule of locations, dates, and times can be found at http://www.NSPF.org/Resources/spa_safety/Training.aspx. Contact Amanda Rogers to sign up at Amanda.Rogers@nspf.org, or call 719-540-9119. Public health inspectors, aquatics managers, state and local health officials and regulators are encouraged to attend and participate in this critical learning opportunity.

In September 2010, the NSPF® was awarded a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) contract, through Erica Lane Enterprises, to help bring all public pools and spas into compliance with the P&SS Act.

The NSPF-hosted National P&SS Act Training Sessions and Safety Event will include educational materials and demonstrations, methods of compliance, background on the federal law, the types and causes of entrapment, how to effectively conduct compliance inspections and how to educate facilities managers about compliance with the Act.  In the coming months, NSPF will coordinate P&SS Act Training Sessions in conjunction with various state associations, including the National Environmental Health Association’s (NEHA) Annual Educational Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

The second National P&SS Act Safety Event (a 5-hour course) was held in concert with the Orlando Pool & Spa Show in Florida, on Feb. 10. A CPSC representative will be present to answer questions, and the event will be videotaped and subsequently posted on the web as a free resource for those who could not attend at http://www.nspf.org/Resources/spa_safety/Training.aspx

The National P&SS Act Training Sessions and Safety Events provide the useful technical information essential to meeting the CPSC’s goal to educate state and local health officials on compliance procedures as outlined by guidance documents provided by the CPSC.  The P&SS Act required all public pools and spas to come into compliance by December 19, 2008, and it is believed that many have not yet made the necessary changes.

About NSPF

The National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) is a non-profit organization founded in 1965, giving back over $3.7 million in the past seven years to fund grants to prevent illness, injury, and drowning, and to demonstrate the benefits of aquatic activity.  NSPF® is the leading educator for professionals who service and operate public and private pools and spas and for public health officials who are responsible for pool safety.  NSPF has a long history of working with environmental health officials and health departments.  NSPF® has given over 1.1 million dollars in grants since 2003 to help prevent recreational water illness, drowning, injuries and chemical exposure. 24 Hour Fitness Introduces Exercise Guidelines for People of All Fitness Levels
Source: 24 Hour Fitness

Science-based Recommendations Offer Simple Approach to Health and Exercise

SAN RAMON, CALIF. – 24 Hour Fitness has introduced universal exercise guidelines for people of all ages and fitness levels. The 24 Hour Fitness® Exercise Guidelines – an innovation in the health club industry – were developed by 24 Hour Fitness in consultation with former U.S. Assistant Surgeon General Susan Blumenthal, M.D., M.P.A., a national health expert. The recommendations synthesize information from the most respected and authoritative organizations on health and wellness, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the World Health Organization, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association.

“Our goal is to break down the barriers that prevent people from reaching their fitness goals, and we recognize that sometimes the hardest part of fitness is simply understanding what to do and how often to do it,” said Carl Liebert III, chief executive officer, 24 Hour Fitness. “We are proud to share these exercise guidelines with our members and the public, hoping that they will help people find ways to make fitness a part of their everyday lives.”

The new 24 Hour Fitness Exercise Guidelines offer clear, evidence-based recommendations that cut through the clutter and allow individuals to find the best possible fitness plan for themselves. In addition to providing recommendations for how frequently and intensely individuals should engage in both cardiovascular and strength training exercises, the guidelines reflect specific considerations for four key groups:

·        Adolescents (ages 11-17)
·        Adults (ages 18-64)
·        Older adults (ages 65 and older)
·        Pregnant or postpartum women

For instance, 24 Hour Fitness recommends that the average adult participate in 30 minutes of moderate-intensity, or 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity cardio activity, five days per week and perform muscle-strengthening activities two to three days per week. The guidelines also provide examples of everyday activities, such as washing a car or playing sports, to help people meet their fitness needs both in and outside of the gym. Additional details about specific recommendations for each age group can be found at www.24hourfitness.com/exerciseguidelines.

“The introduction of these guidelines couldn’t be more timely, as a recent survey found that 72 percent of Americans plan to be more physically active in 2011,” said Randy Drake, senior vice president of fitness, 24 Hour Fitness. “We know it’s not always easy to get to the gym, but if step one is goal-setting, then step two is having a clear understanding of how to get started and what to do in order to achieve, and even surpass, your personal goals.”

24 Hour Fitness members can expect to see these exercise guidelines rolled out across 24 Hour Fitness clubs nationwide, along with suggestions on how to customize fun, dynamic workouts that will help them meet these goals. The complete guidelines can also be found online at www.24hourfitness.com/exerciseguidelines.

About the 24 Hour Fitness Exercise Guidelines
Recommendations were synthesized from the following sources: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) including the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, the Surgeon General's Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation 2010, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); the 2010 World Health Organization Global Recommendations on Physical Activity and Health; the American Heart Association; the American College of Sports Medicine; the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the Mayo Clinic. Each source’s guidelines were compiled and compared for areas of agreement. 24 Hour Fitness also developed these recommendations in consultation with former U.S. Assistant Surgeon General Susan Blumenthal, M.D., M.P.A., a national health expert. These recommendations are an important component of health education efforts, but are not intended to be used for the diagnosis or treatment of a health problem or as a substitute for consulting a licensed medical professional.

MLB Groundskeepers Gather toe Renovate Deteriorating High School Field
Source: PROFILE Products LLC

Effort is part of 13th annual MLB symposium and field renovation event, sponsored by Turface Athletics™

AUSTIN, Texas — For the 13th consecutive year, 48 Major League Baseball groundskeepers from 26 clubs gathered for a two-day symposium that culminated with a field renovation project at a local ball field. The three-day event, held this year in Austin, Texas, was sponsored by Turface Athletics™ (www.turface.com), in partnership with Toro, Covermaster, and the Baseball Tomorrow Fund.

Austin Reagan High School was this year’s renovation site. The school is part of a district that has suffered budget cuts and declining facilities in recent years. The renovation effort took place over the course of nearly an entire year, culminating with an unveiling ceremony on Jan. 11, 2011. The project was coordinated and overseen by Dan Bergstrom, head groundskeeper of the Houston Astros.

“I knew this project had potential to be fantastic,” Bergstrom said. “The opportunity to lead a team that brought some good news to a neighborhood, a school, and a baseball team that, frankly, needed some good news to continue to rebuild their programs, was rewarding beyond words.”

The finished product included new sod, infield mix, bullpen mounds, fencing and — still to come — lighting, dugouts and a scoreboard.

Bergstrom said Austin Reagan stood out from several site candidates in the Austin area because the school provided not only a chance to improve a high school field, but a way to impact a wider community where a first-rate facility could play host to youth summer leagues and Major League Baseball’s RBI program.

“It is our hope that the field renovation will help several programs grow significantly in this area, including the newly launched Austin RBI program,” said Meghan Chisholm, senior grant coordinator for the Baseball Tomorrow Fund. “(After seeing) the support of the community and the enthusiasm of the staff at Austin Reagan High School, we feel confident in our selection of this project.”

The project was also supported by an Austin-based organization called For the City. The volunteer group has worked to rehabilitate Austin’s east side community, where Austin Reagan is located, in recent years.

According to Jeff Langner, brand manager for Turface Athletics, the MLB Symposium and Field Rebuild are a natural fit for Turface and its commitment to education and field improvement.

“Being able to participate in something like this is a real privilege for us as a company,” Langner said. “Our mission is to make fields safe and playable, and to bring field maintenance education into communities. In partnering with the groundskeepers, we were able to achieve all of these goals at Austin Reagan.”  About PROFILE Products LLC

Synthetic Turf Association Launched as an Industry Voice
Source: Synthetic Turf Association

New group formed to build on synthetic turf industry growth

GLEN ELLYN, IL  – The synthetic turf industry has a new voice with the formal launch today of the Synthetic Turf Association, an industry group whose mission is to ensure the expansion and prosperity of the synthetic turf industry.

The synthetic turf market has grown significantly over the last several years, however there is even greater opportunity for growth because of the substantial benefits synthetic turf offers in installations where water is restricted, where maintenance resources are limited, and where increasing field playing time is in demand.  Therefore it’s believed that a strong industry association that is committed to educating and strong advocacy is needed.

The Synthetic Turf Association (STA) is necessary to help grow the market for synthetic turf products.  It will accomplish this by being laser focused on:

1.       Educating users, specifiers, and the industry about the value of synthetic turf products.

2.      Promoting the use of synthetic turf products to decision makers and specifiers of athletic fields, commercial and residential applications.

3.      Advocating on behalf of the synthetic turf manufacturing industry to ensure synthetic turf products can compete fairly in the open marketplace.

After a widespread search for an individual with strong leadership skills and extensive industry experience, the Synthetic Turf Association has named Mr. Hank Steinbrecher as its first Chairman.  Steinbrecher was the Secretary General of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) from 1990 to 2000, a decade in which soccer in the United States made huge strides both on and off the field. Among his many accomplishments is a leadership position at the Quaker Oats Company, where he spearheaded Gatorade's rise to prominence in the 1980's. In addition to his proven leadership skills throughout the world of sports business over the last two decades, he has worked as a consultant with artificial turf manufacturer FieldTurf.

“Over the course of the last decade, I have been involved in the synthetic turf industry in many different facets,” said Steinbrecher. “Since the very beginning, the well-being of the industry has become a strong interest of mine. It is clear that as the industry progresses, it needs a strong voice. One that is not a self-serving voice but rather an organization that focuses on success for all. That is what the Synthetic Turf Association is all about - growing the pie for everyone”.

Synthetic turf industry leaders initiated discussions about establishing a new organization to better meet the marketplace needs of the industry. After a series of meetings, the group completed the appropriate legal filings to establish itself as the Synthetic Turf Association and has established association offices in Glen Ellyn, Ill.

675 "Party Hearty" Zumbathons in 46 States to Benefit American Heart Association
Source: Zumba Fitness

$200,000 already raised from Party Hearty Zumbathons to support American Heart’s Go Red Por Tu Corazón Movement

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Through May, Zumba Fitness offers men and women nationwide a chance to experience the excitement of its high-energy workouts while raising funds and awareness for the fight against heart disease. Through its Party Hearty program, a multi-faceted relationship with Go Red Por Tu Corazón, the American Heart Association’s bilingual heart-health movement for Latinas, Zumba instructors are hosting 675 Zumbathon charity classes in 46 states with charitable donations already totaling $200,000 to-date.

“Zumba fitness is now a global phenomenon in more than 110 countries and when we found out how much U.S. Hispanic women were at risk for heart disease, we knew we needed to do something,” said Alberto Perlman, CEO of Zumba Fitness. “Together with our dedicated instructors and fans, we’re excited to embark on another national cause-related campaign that will draw attention to the parallel between a healthy lifestyle and heart health.”

A full listing of all Party Hearty Zumbathons can be found at partyhearty.org, with more being added daily. Limited edition Party Hearty Zumbawear™ apparel may also be purchased, with 30 percent of the sales price from each being donated to the American Heart Association’s Go Red Por Tu Corazón movement.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the U.S., with Hispanic women at greater risk, unless they adopt healthy eating choices and a frequent physical activity regimen.

“Hispanic women face the highest risk of death from heart disease, but they have lower risk factor awareness,” said Dr. Ileana Piña, MD, FACC, Professor of Cardiology and Internal Medicine.  “While we can’t change certain risk factors, such as ethnicity and family history, women can help reduce their risks and prevent heart disease by making heart-healthy changes, and incorporating nutrition and physical activity into their lifestyle.”

SAFE Foundation Raises Record Amount at STMA Conference Charity Event
Source: The Foundation for Safer Athletic Fields

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Foundation for Safer Athletic Fields for Everyone (SAFE), the charitable arm of the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA), raised more than $25,000 for scholarships, grants, and the production of educational materials during the 2011 STMA Conference and Exhibition held in Austin, Texas, Jan. 11-15, 2011.  These monies were raised through many events including a golf tournament, raffles, and auctions held throughout the conference.

Nearly 80 golfers competed in the Eleventh Annual SAFE Jacobsen Golf Tournament held at the Golf Club at Star Ranch.  Those golfers and more than 25 pre-registered players who could not make it to Austin because of inclement weather around the country donated nearly $14,000 to SAFE.  The net-scramble style tournament was won by the team of Russell Barksdale, Randall Carpenter, Chris Price and Allen Reed.  The signature course provided players with a challenging, but fair, test of their skills.  The SAFE Jacobsen Golf Tournament would not be possible without the generous contributions of Jacobsen, a Textron Company.   Since it began sponsoring the tournament, Jacobsen has raised more than $158,000 for SAFE and contributed to countless memories for STMA golfers each year.

Due to Texas state gaming laws, SAFE was not able to continue the Pull-Tab Lottery Style Game.  These tickets were tremendously popular with attendees in 2010 in Disney.  However, in typical STMA Member fashion, attendees stepped up and ensured that the SAFE Auctions and Raffles conducted in the Exhibition Hall and at the Awards Banquet Reception on Friday brought in a record amount.  Winners walked away with some amazing autographed memorabilia, apparel, a Toro Turf Guard System valued at $7,800, electronics, hotel packages, golf gear, sports turf specific equipment, and an African photo safari valued at more than $4,000!  The Large Item Raffle held at the Awards Banquet Reception was a success as well, raising more than $1,800.  A Panasonic HD Camcorder, Amazon Kindle and Gift Package, Sony CyberShot Camera and an all-inclusive trip to next year’s conference in Long Beach were all given away to lucky winners.

About SAFE: The SAFE Foundation is the charitable arm of STMA.  Its mission is to enrich communities through championing safe, sustainable sports and recreation fields for all athletes.  As a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, it also provides scholarships and funds education to help sports turf managers with the challenges they face in managing athletic fields.

About STMA: STMA is the not-for-profit, professional association for the men and women who manage sports fields.  Since 1981, the association and its dozens of local chapters have been providing education, information and sharing practical knowledge in the art and science of sports field management.  Its more than 2,500 members oversee sports fields and facilities at schools, colleges and universities, parks and recreational facilities, and professional sports stadiums worldwide.

Hayward Pool Products Pledges Up to $1 Million In Products for Pools In Need
Source: Hayward Pool Products

Company to donate safety vacuum release systems to public pools serving worthy cause that are not yet in compliance with Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act.

ELIZABETH, N.J. — Hayward® Pool Products has announced its pledge of up to $1 million dollars in Hayward safety vacuum release systems (SVRS) to North American pools in need. According to Hayward, the leading pool products manufacturer in the country, the “Safe Swimming Initiative” is designed to assist those public pools serving the community who are facing compliance challenges with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (VGB) because of budgetary issues.

Hayward Vice President of Product Management Kevin Potucek explained that the safe enjoyment of pools and spas is paramount to Hayward’s mission. “When it comes to pool safety, multiple layers of protection are crucial,” he said. VGB went into effect December 19, 2008 to improve public pool safety specifically as it applies to suction outlets. Under the law, all public pools and spas must have VGB-compliant drain covers, properly separated or unblockable drains or anti-entrapment systems such as a Safety Vacuum Release System (SVRS) as prescribed by the Act.

“We know that due to economic cutbacks this is a difficult time for many public swimming pool operations,” Potucek said. “There are many facilities serving under-privileged children, senior citizens, physically or mentally disabled citizens or other worthy causes. For whatever reason, they are not yet compliant and are at risk of not opening this spring. We want to help.”

Under the terms of the initiative, Hayward will donate up to the retail equivalent of $1 million of Hayward Stratum® SVRS to qualified swimming pool facilities that demonstrate a valid need. The initiative will run through July 1or until $1 million in Hayward Stratum VRS products have been awarded, whichever comes first.  Hayward will refer facility operators to registered installers.

To submit a request for consideration in Hayward’s Safe Swimming Initiative, concerned citizens, pool operators and servicers are encouraged to go to www.haywardpool.com and click on the “Hayward Pledges up to $1 Million for Pool Safety” button. Products will be awarded with special consideration for public or non-profit facilities serving populations that are under-privileged or have special needs.

Unique Partnership to Strengthen Ice Arena Management and Recreation in the US

ASHBURN, Va. - The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has partnered with the Ice Skating Institute (ISI) and the National Training Center (NTC) for Public Facility Managers at Oglebay to present the Ice Arena Institute of Management (iAIM) program.  The iAIM program is the ice skating industry’s only educational forum designed to develop and recognize current and future management, programming and operating personnel, and perpetuate a standardized education and certification system.

The iAIM program offers comprehensive training and certification in ice arena management as well as courses to promote executive development.  The program consists of four core educational tracks: Management, Operations, Programming and Design, Construction & Renovation.  Each course provides students the technical education and confidence to successfully face real-world challenges encountered in the ice arena environment.  The goal of the iAIM School is to make graduates more valuable to their facility, providing a competitive advantage for their organizations through heightened service, increased productivity and lower operating costs.

The new partnership, which launches at the Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in Wheeling, W.Va., Sept. 18-23, 2011, has united iAIM and NTC for a second time—the first partnership taking place in 2001.

“The National Training Center at Oglebay is excited to again be the host site and operating partner of the ice management school,” said Bill Koegler, director of NTC at Oglebay.  “Using the successful Oglebay/NRPA school and institute template will further strengthen the outstanding educational program currently being offered, and provide a firm home base for the school to grow on an annual basis.”

“The Ice Skating Institute is excited about its plans to return the iAIM program to Oglebay where it all started ten years ago,” said Peter Martell, executive director of the Ice Skating Institute.  “Oglebay provides the perfect setting for a concentrated education and training program, while the new partnership with NRPA provides access and CEU accreditation for recreation professionals nationwide.”
