Playworld Systems' Products Cradle to Cradle Certified
Source: Playworld

LEWISBURG, PA (September 7, 2011) - Playworld Systems, a leading manufacturer of imaginative playground and fitness equipment, today announced all of its product lines from its 2010 catalog have been Cradle to Cradle Certified Basic. Cradle to Cradle Certified is a rigorous and comprehensive environmental certification system administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute that evaluates products and materials for their impact on human health and environmental health and design for future life cycles. The certification does not include the electronic components sealed inside certain Playworld Systems products. Playworld Systems is the only playground manufacturer to complete the rigorous process and earn this notable sustainability certification.

Playworld Systems worked closely with McDonough Braungart Design Cheistry (MBDC) to collect data throughout the supply chain, assess all materials for impact to human and environmental health, and evaluate manufacturing processes for use of renewable energy, water stewardship, and social responsibility. MBDC is a global consultancy and certification firm that helps clients create a positive footprint on the planet by implementing the Cradle to Cradle design framework.

"This independent certification proves that Playworld Systems is lessening its impact on the planet beyond industry standards and laws," said Matt Miller, chief executive officer of Playworld Systems. "Sustainability can be a relative term - and in general we believe there's too much posturing in green positioning, and not enough substance. We're honored to receive this recognition because it confirms that Playworld Systems is doing more than simply removing potentially harmful materials. We aim to have our entire product line reused as consumable materials in the future. This is about doing more good for our environment, and not just less bad. It is a further extension of our commitment to make the most conscientious choices in our manufacturing process, which will impact future generations."

The Cradle to Cradle Certified program provides guidelines to help businesses like Playworld Systems evaluate all materials in its supply chain and focus on using safe materials that can be disassembled, recycled and repurposed. The process is helping Playworld Systems ensure that potentially toxic materials in its products, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, lead and heavy metals are identified and removed with an eye toward repurposing the materials in future consumer products once the useful lifecycle is complete.

The certification is recognized by environmental experts worldwide for its innovation in sustainability. In the US for example, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM products in its Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) database for federal agency procurement. In addition, these certified products are eligible for points in the USGBC's LEED certification for green buildings.

"The certification process is a comprehensive approach to evaluating the design of products, their chemical make-up down to the parts per million range, and the practices employed during manufacturing. We are proud to see Playworld Systems joining the ranks of Aveda, Armstrong and Method Home products. Playworld Systems is setting a positive example for other companies with respect to social and environmental responsibility," said William McDonough, named 'hero of the planet' by TIME magazine and founding principal of MBDC.

"In 2008, we took a leadership position in our industry by pledging to remove PVC from our products because we believed it was the responsible thing to do," added Miller. "Our playground and fitness equipment is the focal point for many communities around the world. We have tremendous respect for the natural environments with which our products co-exist. We feel responsible for making sure our equipment enhances a community and doesn't compromise it."

Sports Construction Group Completes Eight Projects in Northeast Ohio

Source: Sports Construction Group

Cleveland, OH — August 25, 2011 — Sports Construction Group L.L.C. (SCG), a premier builder of synthetic turf and natural grass athletic fields, capped off a busy summer season by completing six synthetic turf projects in Northeast Ohio, making bullpen modifications for the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field and breaking ground on a synthetic turf baseball field at Cuyahoga Community College.

The bullpen work for Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Indians included the installation of synthetic turf, artificial dirt around the home plates and new trench drains.

The other Northeast Ohio projects SCG completed this summer include:
  • John Carroll University’s Shula Stadium  – a synthetic turf system and running track
  • Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium – a synthetic turf system
  • Youngstown State University’s Watson and Tressel Training Site – a synthetic turf system for the state-of-the-art indoor training facility
  • St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland – replacement of its practice field with a new synthetic turf system
  • Jackson High School’s Robert Fife Stadium, Massillon – a new synthetic turf field
  • Denison Park, Cleveland Heights – a new synthetic turf field for recreational sports

A photo gallery of the SCG-constructed fields can be found online at www.facebook.com/SCGfields.

In addition, SCG is currently constructing a synthetic turf baseball infield, complete with a synthetic pitcher’s mound, at Ron Mottl Field, located on the Western Campus of Cuyahoga Community College in Parma.

“We’re proud to have built fields for some of the most fabled teams in sports, from the New York Yankees to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.  As a Cleveland-area company, we feel an identical level of pride and bring the same degree of professionalism to these projects right here in our back yard,” said SCG President and CEO Paul Franks.

The synthetic turf utilized on the projects was manufactured by Shaw Sportexe, one of the leading synthetic turf companies in North America with more than 700 successful installations.

SCG constructed the original playing surface at Progressive Field, which was then called Jacobs Field, in 1997 and has since done other work for the Indians over the years.  The success of that project helped the company land the construction of other professional and Division I college fields around the country, including Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Organizations Seek to Gauge Industry Interest in Pool and Spa Safety Grant Program
Source: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission / National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of the Centers for Disease Control

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention anticipate that a pool and spa safety grant program will be available in fiscal year 2012. Consequently, both organizations are gauging eligibility for, and interest in, this important grant program by asking pool professionals to review the eligibility requirements and Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act grant program background information below and ask themselves two simple questions:

1.      Based on the documentation provided, do you believe that your state or locality might be eligible to apply for a grant?

2.      Would your state or locality be interested in applying for the VGB grant program?

Documents that provide information about the grant program and the requirements for eligibility are here:
The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (Sections 1405 and 1406)
Model Legislation
Technical Guidance

If you think your state or locality might be eligible and would be interested in potentially applying, please send an e-mail to Elizabeth Leland: eleland@cpsc.gov. Based on interest, the organizations will determine if a conference call to discuss the particulars of the upcoming Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) would be productive. Notifying the organizations about your interest will allow them to send you information about the call. Please reply by September 2, 2011.

Participating in this call does not constitute eligibility for the grant program, nor does it obligate you to apply. Once the FOA is published, CPSC staff will conduct a review of actual legislation to determine eligibility. Instructions for the process to determine eligibility will be a part of the FOA.

As background information, the VGB Act directs the CPSC to establish a program to award grants to be used primarily to hire and train enforcement personnel for the implementation and enforcement of a state or local government’s swimming pool and spa safety law.  The grants also can be used for the education of pool construction, installation, and service companies as well as pool owners, operators, and members of the public about pool safety standards and the prevention of drowning or entrapment of children using swimming pools and spas.

To be eligible to apply for a grant, states and localities must have a statute in place that requires residential pool owners, as well as public pool operators, to meet certain swimming pool and spa requirements. If states or their political subdivisions have a statute that meets the minimum legal requirements, they would be eligible to apply for and potentially receive grant awards. The organizations anticipate that up to six grants, ranging in amounts from $100,000 to $1 million would be awarded. The grant program would be announced in the spring of 2012 and grants would be awarded in the summer of 2012.
