Brock International Helps Green Farm Academy Create Completely Sustainable Synthetic Turf Field
Source: Brock International

Westport, Conn. (May 29, 2012) – Environmental stewardship, along with outstanding academics, is a key value for Greens Farm Academy in Westport, Connecticut.  Determined to create the first completely sustainable high school synthetic turf field in the state, the independent school selected Brock PowerBase, the only Cradle to Cradle Certified CM product in the synthetic turf industry, as the underlayment for their new athletic field.

"A great deal of research went into finding a type of synthetic turf field that would address environmental and safety concerns,” explained Mandy Argenio, Director of Development, Greens Farms Academy. “Our field is constructed with the latest state-of-the-art technology.  The Brock underlay is a green building product--both it and the infill are themselves recyclable. In keeping with our sustainability efforts, we are the first school in Connecticut to put in an environmentally responsible synthetic turf field."

Greens Farms Academy (GFA) began as an independent day school in 1925 in Westport, Connecticut.  Today it's a K-12 school with 685 diverse students from 30 surrounding towns.  The campus covers 42 acres bordering three ecosystems--Long Island Sound, a salt marsh and an Audubon wilderness--all of which serve as outdoor classrooms. In 2010, GFA launched a school-wide initiative, the World Perspectives Program, which exposes students to global issues confronting the world and to ways of creating a more sustainable future. Working to ensure its ecological sensitive natural resources are sustained for the future, the school fosters this awareness and compassion with students, graduates, faculty, staff and the parent body. For more information, visit www.gfacademy.org.

The 80,000 square foot, multipurpose synthetic turf field was created by FieldTurf. Since its installation last September, the playing surface has been used for field hockey, soccer, lacrosse and other student activities.

About Brock International

Brock International is the leader in performance base systems for synthetic turf.  With over 20 million square feet of Brock Performance Base in play underneath athletic fields worldwide, the company engineers the best, safest and most sustainable playing surfaces in the world for athletes at all levels. Brock has handled hundreds of successful installations for clients ranging from NFL teams and major universities to community parks.  In October 2011, Brock became the first company in the industry to have a Cradle to Cradle Certification CM for its combined drainage and shock pad product. Offering the only product in the market that can be closed loop recycled, the company’s technologies reduce the overall energy cost of constructing a field by 50%. In addition, scientific testing proves the product reduces the likelihood of traumatic brain injury by up to 50%, provides the same G-Max and playability as a pristine natural grass field and mitigates field hardening over time.  Visit www.brock-international.com to learn more.

Parks and Playgrounds Use Synthetic Grass to Increase Activity Levels for Preschoolers
Source: Synthetic Turf Council

(Atlanta, Ga.) – While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under five play outside as much as possible, an April 2012 study led by Seattle Children's Research Institute found that nearly half of U. S. preschoolers did not have even one parent-supervised outdoor play opportunity per day.  Recognizing that the lack of convenient outdoor spaces contributes to this trend, a growing number of parks and preschools are choosing synthetic grass for their playgrounds to allow more opportunities for young kids to be active.

“According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity rates among children younger than five have doubled over the last two decades,” said Rick Doyle, President of the Synthetic Turf Council. “Synthetic grass playgrounds offer safe, resilient and accessible surfaces that can be used by kids year-round to increase physical activity levels.”

New synthetic grass playgrounds nationwide have reclaimed previously unusable spaces for the benefit of the community. Cumberland Park in Nashville, Tennessee was built on a former brown field industrial site adjacent to the Cumberland River reclaimed by park planners working closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and state environmental officials.  With more than one million visitors expected annually, officials decided to install synthetic grass from ForeverLawn in heavy activity areas such as playgrounds and a climbing wall because of its durability, the option to incorporate safety features and ability to conserve water.

The City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department in Nevada manages aquatics and recreation centers and boasts 54 neighborhood and community parks.  However soaring summer temperatures caused cracks, separations, peeling and fading in the poured-in-place rubber surfaces used in the playgrounds.  They turned to SYNLawn to replace dilapidated rubber surfaces in five parks with synthetic grass, create more attractive, safer play areas for young children and kids of all ages. Daycare facilities have also recognized the benefits of synthetic grass playgrounds, like Home Depot’s Early Childhood Development Center at its corporate offices in Atlanta, Georgia. Located at the base of a steep grade, the unique playground from ForeverLawn features synthetic grass hills and valleys and even a lazy river defined by the winding blue turf.  Special padding under the turf creates fall safety zones and the entire playground is ADA accessible.

About the Synthetic Turf Council
Based in Atlanta, the Synthetic Turf Council was founded in 2003 to promote the industry and to assist buyers and end users with the selection, use and maintenance of synthetic turf systems in sports field, golf, municipal parks, airports, landscape and residential applications.  The organization is also a resource for current, credible, and independent research on the safety and environmental impact of synthetic turf.  Membership includes builders, landscape architects, testing labs, maintenance providers, manufacturers, suppliers, installation contractors, infill material suppliers and other specialty service companies.  For more information, visit www.syntheticturfcouncil.org.

24th Annual Project ACES Day May 2
Source: Project ACES

INDIANAPOLIS - In conjunction with May as Exercise is Medicine® Month, "The World's Largest Exercise Class" is coming to children and schools around the world May 2nd. Millions of children across the globe will be celebrating the 24th annual Project ACES Day beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2. In addition to Exercise is Medicine Month, Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) coincides with National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and National Physical Education Week.

Project ACES engages millions of children, parents, and teachers each year to participate in physical activity at their schools and at home. Through Project ACES, children learn the value and importance of good nutrition, adequate physical fitness and healthy decision-making – lessons they can carry well into adulthood.

Schools can choose their activity, from walking to jogging, from martial arts to dancing. Students typically exercise for 15 to 45 minutes following an educational component. In the past, schools have incorporated celebrity guest speakers or used music in their Project ACES activities. The program has been recognized by multiple presidents, including Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan, and has inspired events in 50 different countries. As the time zones change, this chain of local events creates a global wave of exercise.

"Project ACES is a great way to teach children how to live a healthy lifestyle through adequate physical activity,” said physical education teacher Len Saunders, who created the program to motivate children to exercise in 1989. “Childhood obesity is an issue plaguing many young people today, and Project ACES is designed to make physical activity fun.”

Schools and students will celebrate Project ACES Day by making physical activity a priority. Federal physical activity guidelines recommend children and adolescents do 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Project ACES helps children reach this goal with activities ranging from jogging to sports and games. Teachers can also make physical activity a priority throughout the year by creating a Project ACES Club at their school.

“We're all in this together,” said Shihan H. J. Saunders, the president of the Youth Fitness Coalition and an exercise physiologist. "Something magical happens when we synchronize our collective consciousness in the spirit of FUN on Project ACES Day.”

Parents are invited to participate by joining their kids at school or by celebrating on May 5th for the fifth annual PACES Day: Parents and Children Exercise Simultaneously. PACES Day kicks off a 52-week exercise program with various fun activities parents can enjoy with their children. The PACES website offers resources including a list of family activity ideas for every week of the year.

“If we feel good about ourselves, we can lead by example, and inspire our kids to be their fit best, not just with Project ACES and PACES Day, but every day and toward each other,” said Shihan Saunders.

PACES Day and Project ACES are signature programs of the Youth Fitness Coalition, a New Jersey-based non-profit organization committed to combating childhood obesity by making exercise programs fun, medically safe and age-appropriate by educating and inspiring children, parents and teachers about the importance of lifelong fitness and making healthy lifestyle choices daily.
